I am looking to get back into my fitness and join a local cycling club, hoping to eventually become competitive (once those pounds have been shed a bit )
Does anybody know of any clubs / groups that meet up near to Thalwil or anywhere in Zurich, I don't mind cycling from Thalwil to then meet up with people.
Also if anyone fancies going for a ride from EF forums would be good to meet and get to know some new people
What sort of distance and how fast? I'd be interested going out for a spin with other cyclists but I'm out Winti way. I go out on my own most Sundays at the moment, although I don't think I'll be out this weekend.
If you fancy a ride out with someone who's not particularly fast then PM me. I usually do about 3 hours averaging around 22km/h depending on how much uphill there is
I have done a few tours around Zurichsee (mostly flat) and was averaging between 18-22mph. With hills involved I will not be anywhere near as fast but its good to cycle with company anyhow so it would be good to arrange a bike ride sometime.
Where would you fancy going? Other than my few tours around the lake I havent done a huge amount of other tours so ideas would be good
18mph is quite a bit faster than my 22kph! I've done the loop by the airport which is flat and fast, but not yet done the lake. Check out www.veloland.ch as well. It's where I get my routes from.
My favourites are Winterthur to Stein am Rhein or Rheinfall. If the forecast for Sunday improves I could well be up for spin. I don't mind cycling in the rain but a draw a line at thunderstorms and heavy downpour after cycling in similar conditions a few weeks ago and having to go 4 hrs with wet feet!!! :-(
They are mainly focused on MTB and Alpine Skiing, but they also organize the occasional Road ride.
I don't participate much there, because their style of road events are mostly of cyclo tourism kind: So meet at the train station, take a train to somewhere to climb a pass and then take the train back.
If that is your interest then there is a good number of cyclists there.
Me I prefer to train on the hills around home, we have plenty here, and the idea of driving or taking a train to ride my bike seems just unnatural.
Hey Ferkel, I would really be keen to do the airport route as I've not done it yet, we could meet and start from wherever you think best. What sort of distance is it?
I was referring to a section of the Glatt-Route which follows the river, some of the route isn't tarmaced but I took my road bike on it and other than a bit of vibration it was fine and it lived to tell the tale! Looking at the details of the Glatt-Route it is 64km from Glattfelden to Rapperswil with a total 640m ascent.
Also, there are options for a loop from the Airport which take in part of the Glatt-Route of 50km (with circa 400m ascent) or 90km (circa 650m ascent). I'd be up for giving any options a go. I just love getting out on the bike!
Perhaps I should post a plan on the Social Events as I know there was a ride out today that I couldn't make - maybe a few others would enjoy a spin out?
Many road rides on the meetup group start from Zürich itself.
The local hills don't go to 2400m or offer some of the spectacular scenery you'll see riding through the alps. And the challenging climbs are usually rewarded by kick-ass decents.
As "unnatural" as it may be, the train ride does offer a chance to socialise, share ideas and experiences, as does the food stops along our routes.
No worries CornishPasty. I'm normally working during the week so Sundays are my usual riding days. Hopefully the weather will stay nice and dry for sometime yet.
I'm new to Switzerland, living in Horgen and would like to get out on my road bike. Did anything come from your post (I know it's a few years back). If you know of people locally who are getting out, especially at the weekend, it'd be great to hear back.
