I have a question about a regular point-to-point commuting (train most probably) between my work place (in Liechtenstein) and my home (not known yet).
I have got a job offer in Liechtenstein and obviously the most appropriate place to live would be then any of the small cities located in eastern Switzerland (like Chur, Buchs, etc.). However there is a big problem here. My partner and somewhat I myself have difficulties to get adopted to small places without traffic jams and big shopping centers like those mentioned above. Our ideal place is of course a big metropolitan city which is nonexistence in Switzerland.
The most probable solution I found so far is to live either in St. Gallen or Zurich and commuting every day to my job via Sargans. I checked the times and found that the Zurich to Sargans train trip takes about 55 min while ST. Gallen to Sargans takes 15 to 20 min more. Another option is of course driving.
Now I am wondering if anyone here in this forum have such experience of daily commuting from any of the major cities of Zurich or St. Gallen to Liechtenstein or its nearby? What are your recommendations?
If it is ridiculously stupid to live in any of these two cities and working in Liechtenstein, which of the small nearby towns is more appropriate to our taste (which I think you know it by now)?
If action is important, do your Zürich or St. Gallen thing. Or even Chur, which has more to offer than Sargans or Buchs but can get quiet as well.
Drive is not bad, relaxing is the train. You will be traveling against the traffic - so traffic (roads or passengers on trains) will be less. Plus, if you live in SG, you can get off in Buchs and take the bus into Liechtenstein.
Chur is a lovely place, but not what I'd call exciting in a city kind of way. It took me a while to get used to it, coming from Melbourne but in reality I never went into the city much anyway as we have young children now.
There aren't any shopping centres (actually there is one, but there aren't too many stores and they are all the same as what you can get in town), but almost everything you'd need is here. It's just more individual shops, rather than a US/UK/AUS style shopping centre. There's not the variety like Zurich though! There is a traffic jam at about 5pm which lasts about 5 mintes leading to the freeway What we lack though is a variety of restaurants, it's mainly pizza with a couple of Thai ones thrown in!!
The town is gorgeous though, surrounded my mountains and so many outdoor activities. Very family friendly if you are going to be that way inclined in the future! I do love living here..
Thank you guys. I will continue this post by more accurate questions when I get enough feedback from my employer about the exact place of work and possible living places.
Main problem with train is that Liechtenstein doesn't really have a train service worthy of the name (stops in Schaan, Nendeln and Schaanwald only) and you would probably have to change in Buchs or Sargans to the bus. No problem per se as the busses are cheap and frequent but they are rather slow and it does add quite a bit of time to your journey.
I know people living in Zürich who leave their car in Sargans and drive the last 10 or 15 minutes.
Perfect answer. Thank you baboon. Just one thing else. Are you aware of any direct link to a bus company or any public transportation facilities in east Switzerland/LI which can determine this "quite a bit of time" for me? I tried it on the internet but no success. Thanks
