Could be worse. Our cats are long haired and constantly grooming. As a result they develop hairballs. They will eat grass, which makes them puke up the offending matter. Not a pleasant experience audibly, orally or tactically.

You can buy little trays of grass at pet food stores. Just add a little water and you’ve got a small patch of grass in a day or two. Might help with the early morning drama.

Keep an eye on the dog though. This just might be a symptom of something else.

Perplexity says:

Usually no—occasional grass-eating is common in dogs and is often harmless, but it can also mean mild stomach upset, boredom, or hunger. It’s more worth worrying about if the behavior is new, frequent, or comes with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, or belly pain.[akc +2]
What to watch for
A dog that wakes up early to eat grass may simply be hungry or have an empty stomach, and some vets suggest adjusting meal timing can help in that situation. If the dog is also vomiting, acting uncomfortable, or eating grass obsessively, a vet check is a good idea.[dialavet +2]
When it’s urgent
Seek prompt veterinary care if the dog is vomiting repeatedly, can’t keep food or water down, seems weak, has blood in vomit or stool, or looks bloated or painful. Also, make sure the grass isn’t treated with pesticides or other chemicals.[independenceveterinaryclinic +1]
Practical next step
If the dog otherwise seems normal, tell your friend to note when it happens, whether it’s before breakfast, and whether there’s any vomiting afterward. That pattern helps a vet decide whether it’s just a habit or something digestive.

My dog woke me up today at 05:10, she was sitting next to me on the bed and making noices. 15min later when I wanted to get up and take her out, she decided to go to sleep and I was fully awake. At 06:50 when I decided to go for a walk, she didn’t wanted to get up.

Dogs. Gotta luv 'em.

With some of mine eating grass was a sure sign of stomach upset, especially in the early morning. Often it was a one-off ‘nothing to worry about’, but it could also be a symptom to be followed up on. Keep an eye out if there is repeat vomiting, especially if the pup vomits yellow bile fluid. Or if accompanied by unproductive straining.

On the other hand, sometimes dogs are just weird.

For instance, there was the Belltie, who - after draining much of my bank account via the vet - we determined was actually part cow. He simply liked to chew grass. Morning, noon, night.

Haifisch rose with the sun, which was fine in winter. But come summer, he’d start squeeking to go out the moment dawn broke. Didn’t need to piddle, he just wanted to greet the day.

Hooligan would often wake us up in the wee small hours, insisting on going out. Turned out, she felt the need to have a word with the cheeky neighborhood foxes.

Melon always woke up at 4 with my husband, then after OH left for work would come back to snooze with me until a more civilized hour. He didn’t quite grasp the concept of weekends, though. So on Saturday and Sunday mornings when OH tried to sleep in Melon would start to warble and sing well before dawn - a ploy to kick OH out of bed and claim the newly vacated pillow.

As above, gotta luv 'em.

Hope your dog is just being ‘weird’ as some of mine were. But as always, if that little voice in the back of your head starts chattering, listen to it and consider a chat with the vet.

My dog just likes to eat grass - it never ends well - he also never learns

Mine won’t bother with grass until this time of the year. There is nothing more delicious than bounding over a field through 30cm high grass, eating as you go. It must be particularly succulent or fresh or something.

Her less amusing vice-du-jour is munching on horse poo.
