Dart Charge scam?

I drove to the UK in January, going round the M25 and through the Dartford Tunnel. I paid the Dart Charge toll for both directions (£5 in total): I have a credit card statement as evidence of this.

Now I have received a letter telling me to pay a total of £140 in fines for having failed to pay the toll. It has a photo of my car, and the dates of travel correspond to my dates.

The letter comes from a company called Euro Parking Collection plc and, although the company has a UK address, the letter itself came from Malmo in Sweden, and is in German.

So... is anyone aware of a scam along these lines, or is it just an accident?

Sounds more like a debt collection company. Found a thread with more on it.

They can’t collect so you could ignore it, but I’d sent them a letter with a copy of your credit card statements detailing the payments.

It seems to be a genuine error. When I go to the official UK government site and enter the case number, it does indeed come up with something.

I will just contest the fine using the online form… hopefully they will accept the credit card statement as proof, as I no longer have the recepit (given that it was more than a month ago and I have cleaned out my deleted emails since then).

Please let us know the outcome. Good luck

I was about to say that. People do mistakes.

Don't take it personal, just spent the minimum effort on answering with your proof of payment without giving away info that can be used for identity theft.

Did you pay it on time? Within 24 hours of passing through (or 48 can’t remember). I paid a few hours late once, got that letter, emailed them and they let me off.

Yes, I paid the day before, there and back together.

Send them the email receipt (if you’ve not deleted it) - they’ll cancel the fine. They have an online process for doing this.

I have actually contested the fine twice: once on the official Dart Charge site, and once on the debt collection company's site. The "missing" payment was referenced on both of them. I have a credit card statement showing the payment, which I have now uploaded to both sites. Let's see if they accept it...

Turns out that it was actually my fault. I inverted two numbers in my car registration when I made the booking, so there was no link between my car and the payment.

After no news for more than two months, they have let me off with a rather schoolmasterly lecture about being more careful in future .
