any suggestions where i can go on day hike around Zurich?

How long of a hike?
For a simpler, 1-3 hour walk with nice walking paths, try either range of hills on either side of Zurich:
Dolder (take 3 or 8 to Romerhof; take Dolderbahn up to top of hill and walk around); there's a really cool lookout tower near the top of the hiking area)
Uetliberg (take 33, 32, 17, 13 and make your way from there); there's a restaurant (expensive) at the top of the hill.
Go to Uetliberg (by foot or by train), and from there to Felsenegg (~2h).
From there you can either descend on foot, or by a gondola.
Try the Lorenchopf ( Milchbuck - Zoo - Lorenchopf - Zürich Burgwies ) . Or 1-2 hours outside of the city the Gratwanderung Stoos .
Bachtel, Hörnli or Pfannenstiel are some nice destinations for a day trip.
