I will move to UK soon. Currently i have some tooth problems and need some fillings. Is it better to do it here or just wait for couple of days and do it in UK?
I had the consultation, a brace of xrays, a broken molar (the reason for the visit) fixed, 3 further fillings, a scale and polish, and a treatment plan worked out at a private dentist back in Blighty and the bill was just over £700. I was in the chair for nearly 3 hours all told, and the service I got was terrific. A dentist in Zug wanted CHF 2,000 for the molar alone, but that was approximate as he wanted CHF 125 to get me to fill in a form and have a consultation, and xrays etc were all extra
So for me the return flights Zrh - Man, 4 days car hire, ALL the dental work, and a family round robin cost less than JUST the molar treatment alone here. Also if your moving to the UK and you need a course of treatment it would make more sense to do it in Blighty.
UK. Also they won't look so worried about you. First time I went to a Swiss dentist I came out with the impression that I must be beyond repair (I grind my teeth a bit and he said I needed psychoanalysis) but turns out this is just part of the 'we take you seriously' routine.
I would definitely wait couple of days to do it in UK (unless if you are in real pain as it will get worse in the plane). It will be cheaper for sure in UK, private or NHS.
Last year I had some dental work done in Aigle and the charge was LESS than UK private charges in London. The comments made by in other replies may be a result of being out of touch with present private dental costs in UK. They have gone up a lot in the last year, probably because the expensive work has fallen away with the recession.
Of course NHS dental costs are much cheaper - if you can get the work done!
Back in 2008 I went to the dentist here in Switzerland just for a scale and polish. The dentist insisted on taking x-rays and proceeded to tell me I needed 4 fillings. I have NEVER had a filing before and was horrified.
I was going back to the UK in a week so chose to see my dentist there to save money. He x-rayed me... result was that two of the areas of decay were only minor and being between teeth he was not willing to destroy my whole tooth to get to it. the other two areas were not decay at all but mearly flaws in the enamel. Over 4 years on I'm still fine and still have no fillings. Money grabbing B......ds!!!
That has nothing to do with the nationality but with the dentists you saw. Years ago, Reader's Digest did a survey in the USA, the very same mouth checked and quotes made by 50 dentists all over the country. Result: Estimates between 460 and 29,850 dollars! Very similar in Canada. And the Swiss-French Television did the same, albeit with fewer dentist and, of course, with a different mouth. Result: between 300 and 11'000 CHF.
One dentist says this is a huge cavity and needs a computer-milled full-ceramic restauration, which makes a grand and a half, whereas the other dentist says there is a little spot, let's look what it will look like in a year or two.
I've been to dentists on three continents and hands down the best I've seen is here in Switzerland.* As CG says, it really is a matter of finding the right person, nationality plays little part.
Yes, dental treatment here is very expensive. But if one needs on-going treatment having someone close by is key. I can't imagine hopping on a plane when in serious pain in order to get treated.
I buy much of my 'stuff' in other countries - but not dental care. I've found an outstanding dentist here... and that is worth every Rappen.
*OK, he's an American. But he's been practicing in CH for decades so counts as Swiss.
I am from Serbia and I live in Germany. I am currently in Belgrade , where I visited my family dentist to who my family goes for 20 years. I had 3 filings, calculus removal and teeth polisihing and panoramic x-ray for 118 eur. Last time my father did root canal it costs him less than 100 euro with filing.
Do you have a car. I have a really nice dentist in France, about 1 hour from Lausanne. He speaks good English but not his receptionist though. In his 30s, very gentle and fully recommended:

We have an excellent dentist in the UK, but like most does not do NHS work anymore, and much more expensive!
Yes dentists vary a lot and can charge what they like, so it is very important to ask for a recommendation and get an estimate first! In Britain the good dentists have waiting lists and are not taking new patients.
On my first dental visit here, I opened my mouth and he asked if I had been living in Russia! - no just a result of NHS dentistry. He then charged me CHF 800 to bring me up to Swiss standards, and that was 25 years ago! Then the lady that did all the work was from eastern Europe!
Recently I was in Poland and being there I decided to do some fillings and I was really delighted. The price was about 58 chf per filling. I also asked about the price of implant (I will need one)- about 1760 chf and the standard- best in class. They are working with best implant systems. I was suprised that the language is not a problem because doctors and other staff speak english, german and sometimes other languages. I met a person who established a nice business, they are organizing medical trips to Poland for different medical treatments eg. dentistry, plastik surgey, aesthetic medicines, spa.....I can recommend.
