I am trying to dial international toll free number. From the desk phone it works (00 800 8353 4726); but from the mobile phone (Orange) I am unable to do it.
Did anyone have same problem? Any ways to solve it?
I tried with:
00 800 8353 4726
+ 800 8353 4726
but without success.
Note that this is international toll free number; and not local CH one; therefore two leading zeros.
I don't think this is what the OP means. I originally suggested Skype as that is what I do for foreign 800 numbers. But according to the OP, there is not country code?! Do such number exists: truly international 800 numbers?
A Universal International Freephone Number (UIFN) is a worldwide toll-free "800 number" issued by the ITU . Like the 800 area code issued for the NANP in the U.S. and Canada , the call is free for the caller, and the receiver pays the charges (except on certain cell phones). UIFN uses ITU country code 800, so that no matter where the caller is, only the international access code (IAC), the UIFN country code (800) and the 8-digit UIFN need to be dialed. For example, from the United Kingdom , a caller can dial the UIFN number 00 800 8353 4726 for the International Telegram service . Currently, about 60 countries participate in the UIFN program. Now I see what you mean. I found the info above in wikipedia.
Shame that Orange doesn't participate. I am disappointed. Their helpdesk wasn't able to help me very much...
Also - Cablecom (my fixed provider) is not on the list, but I can dial the number from the fixed phone, works perfectly. So I wonder if ITU's list is up-to-date?
(And just to help skip a lot of noise/for those just joining this thread: this is called a UIFN, Universal International Freephone Numbers. It is not a US 800#, it is not country-specific, and yes there are supposed to be two 0's at the beginning. I tried lots of variations when dialing including adding a country code for both Switzerland and Ireland, dropping one of the 0's, etc. and nothing worked.)
Any ideas? Is anyone else able to call this number from their Swisscom cell and if so, what exactly are you dialing?
Thank you-- message #5 in this thread says that Swisscom should support this UIFN thing and allow me to call these 00800 numbers. I guess that's wrong.
Finding a landline is tough. I don't work in an office; my cell phone is my primary phone.
Very annoying that Swisscom appears to not let me dial this. And weird. If the toll-free number is paid for by the recipient, you'd think they would enable this money-making feature.
My workaround is to call another number on the list then act dumb when they tell you that you've come through to the wrong number. Then you ask if they can transfer you. Job done.
Doesn't work all the time but it sometimes comes up with the goods.
