Sadly it's so much more complex than that.
Historically, CZ was the only "issue"... now, with low conductivity moissanite (e.g. forever one) many testers will fail. Admittedly, a trained eye will see the fire in moissanite pretty quickly.
Couple that with the proliferation of CVD and HPHT diamonds... Which ARE diamonds, but lab grown. Some are sold as such, but some have fake etching.... and suddenly, short of a spectrum analyser it's quite hard to tell.
EDIT: My personal favorite - pair of "diamond" earrings, each with a 1ct round stone... both laser etched, with THE SAME serial number. Seller provided a "certificate" with that 1 serial numner...
