We have real weather here and are not bothered by it. When it is hot we go swimming or to the mountains, when it is winter we have central heating, salt, winter tyres, and snow plows.
Different and depends where you live. I live near Basel and summers can be really hot and we have 3 open air pools within 5 mins drive. The thing is to be prepared. We went walking in Grindlewald last August and it was 25 degrees in Basel but 2 degrees where we were, so if you venture inot the alps you need to take appropriate clothing as it can be very changeable. If you ski best times are from Feb on as you have more blue skies and sunshine(normally)
I'd say that whatever it is, generally the area around Zürich in Switzerland gets more of it than Central England does.
Central CH - in winter it's colder, more snow, in autumn more constant fog in the river valleys and round the lakes, in summer it's hotter, more sun, more rain, more violent thunderstorms than central GB.
But nothing can beat an English spring with a carpet of bluebells - the Swiss are a dead loss there. Crocuses, violets, orchids, gentians, all the common stuff, but bluebells - only the Brits can do that.
Oh, in a normal year, you're absolutely right. They were saying on the news this has been the coldest December in 100 years in the UK, and this past August was the coldest since...I don't remember what they said, but it was record-breaking. The summer was perfect being a bit chilly, but the winter in a Victorian house is not so perfect! Strange abnormal weather here this year.
I would say here the seasons are more defined, in central UK I've been to more summer garage-a-cues than I care to remember.
I was brought up in the north west of England and the recent snow and freezing temps' are very, very extreme for there and caused heaps of problem... the engine block on my hire car froze last week , in CH folk check out snow 'n' rail and head for the hill.
Even though the winters are usually colder for longer, it doesn't feel as cold as the UK. Summers like one of those summers in the UK where papers start to panic about hose pipe bans. Generally the biggest difference I've found is the complete lack of proper gusty wind.
One of the things I really miss in Switzerland is the English weather. In England you can go for walks on the moors and see the weather changing from minute to minute. You get sunshine and showers and there is usually a wind pulling at your hair. In Switzerland you get more extreems but the weather is usually either good or bad. It's quite boring really. I sometimes fly in to Manchester Airport and drive over to Sheffield. Driving through the Peak District I generally stop and go for a walk on Baslow Edge. For those who know the place you will know what this feels like.
