I was reminiscing recently with my sister about childhood favourite meals. When I brought up scampi and chips, did she have to point out that what I had been eating was probably the waste from the canning factory?
Aww! Good job you wernāt eating surimi.
Thats nasty stuff.
Well, not literally the waste (that goes into pet food) but yeah, most likely you were eating scraps of tail meat leftovers from some industrial process, bound together with starch, and with flavour additives.
But does it matter?
No, not really, but I can remember the murmurs of approval when there was a tail sticking out of the batter
I miss little cans of Plumrose ham risotto, I lives on it as a 14 year old lol. Also Goblin hamburgers in a can with gravy, but when I think back goodness knows what was in them.
Oh well, at 65 Iāve lived to tell the tale ![]()
I donāt remember either of those but I have to say they sound disgusting to me now but I would probably have eaten them back then if Iād known about them.
I remember my mum doing a āduocanā Vesta curry for my dad for his dinner one day when he was late home after working overtime. The rice was in one end of the can and the chicken curry in the other. I donāt think he liked it because he never had it again.
Wow, Iāve never heard of Vesta in a can lol
Back in 2003 we went on holiday in Spain with friends of ours who lived in Madrid, husband was at university with my OH and from Yorkshire. We had a day in Gibraltar because there was an M and S where his wife could buy school uniform items for her 12 year old son, Mr Yorkshire wanted the attraction of the huge Morrisons supermarket there. OMG he bought a shedload of stuff like boxes of Vesta Curry, Fray Bentos tinned pies, bottles of Vimto, cases of beer and all sorts. We were supposed to be driving back to Madrid the next day and with the amount of stuff heād bought along with the luggage the back axle of the car started to get a bit dodgy with the weight of 5 passengers on top. I ended up going back in the car with the wife and her son, OH and his mate tried to get a car hire and couldnāt so ended up on a bus full of Ecuadorians that took 11 hours to get to Madrid, they arrived about 6 hours after us, full of beer and starving.
The bus was showing the movie āYouāve Got Mailā, there was no sound but the Ecuadorians were laughing like crazy people.
Worst bit was his mate used to buy all this crap food saying he missed it from home then it would end up getting binned. He did the same when they came to stay with us when we took a holiday rental in Edinburgh and his wife was furious (theyāre no longer together, split up 3 years later).
On another note a Fray Bentos pie destroyed my motherās oven in the early 60s, she put it in the oven not realising you had to take the lid off, it exploded and took the oven door off. Thankfully we were in a prefab that was about to be demolished and we were moving up the street to a new council semi that came with a brand new cooker, I was 5 and at infants school ![]()
That post was a rollercoaster of a read ![]()
Hmmmmmm! Fray bentos pie⦠Used to load the car up with them when visuting mum.
Grandma would give us Capri Sonne as a special treat when we were visiting.
My brother and I loved it. Until some time after I started going to school and could read the ingredients and found that it maybe contained 10% orange juice. Or 12 - but Iām sure it has been lowered over timeā¦
I then realized there was a discrepancy between the packaging and the content and the product lost its appeal almost instantly.
Same with Fanta etc.pp.
That was even before healthy nutrition entered the public dialogue.
