Disposing of old books?

Normally in the UK I would have taken them to a charity shop, but here there is nothing like that anywhere near me.

Can I put them in the paper recycling at our recycling point (large public container)?

You can put them in the regular paper recycling or bring them to a Bücherbrocki nearby.

Or wait a few months and take them to a Church Xmas Sale.

The Anglican Church in Geneva has a huge book sale every year. One year they were selling Migros bags full of books for 10 francs!!

The American Library has two book sales a year.

I vote for Bücherbroki. Burning books seems such a shame (and gives me the creeps thinking of it to be honest ....)

IMHO, it is a sacrilege to bin books. I can't believe that there is no 2nd hand shop/ Brocki/Salvation army/ Caritas etc near you. I'd gladly give up some of my time and search online for one, if you PM me the name of the town or village you are nearest to.

Or see is HIOB has a depot near you.

They’ll also take books and lots of other stuff if they’re in good condition.

And all cookery books to EastEnders :-)

Just brought my books to the Brocki. The guy there was totally overwhelmed with an outbreak of spring-fever in Seefeld. "So many books these days, we'll have to throw many of them away"..

And the one of my friends made a whatsapp group for giving her books away - half of the invited people left the group swiftly, leaving a message that they had also too many books and would gladly give them away!

ROFLMAO!! roegner you are the best

But seriously, it is true. I do collect cook books since almost 40 years so any unloved and unwanted ones get a really good home here.

This won't help the OP, but maybe people in Zurich. There is a free bring and take for books at Stampfenbachstrasse, shortly before the Beckenhof stop. It cannot hold the masses of books some people refer to, though. But there is usually space for a few.

I have asked public libraries which in some countries take current books. Not so in Switzerland.

Childrens books are often welcome at doctors.

I also found people looking for free books, willing to pick them up, on this site: www.anibis.ch

Actually some do but only if the books are in excellent condition. This is Switzerland after all.
