Do babies need residence permit first to receive an AHV number?

Hi there,

Could you please answer my question?

The issue is that we have to give the AHV Number of our baby in basically every single document and if a residence permit is needed for that it would take long time before we get it...

It took us 7 weeks already to get his birth certificate issued (we had to request documents - not older than 6 months - from 3 different countries for that)... Now we finally applied for his passport, which takes approximately 4 weeks to be issued. Only when the passport is ready he will get the residence permit, which will take at least another 2 weeks...

There is no short cut in this process, right?

Also as long as he has no AHV Number, he wont receive his insurance card...

Thanks for sharing your experience with this!

Cheers,

Vixy

Hi Vixy, I can share my experience: I had my son last month in Luzern (Greek parents, permit B). The birth certificate arrived within one week (we had submitted the required documents several months before the birth). The baby does not have a passport yet (it will have to wait until July). The health insurance (Helsana) is already arranged. The insurance card (on which the AHV number is printed) has not arrived yet, but the documents (contract) are finalised. The insurance company will get an AHV number for the baby. Same procedure back in 2013 for my first baby.

The residence permit (B) arrived by post without us having to do a single thing. Again, all this without a passport.

When we first got insurance here the kids' AHV numbers were printed on their insurance cards without us having to give them to the insurance company. Not sure where the insurance company got them from, but it did not seem to be an issue for the insurance. Call and ask?

For us in Basel Stadt, after the births the Hospital informed the authorities and in 3 up to 4 weeks we got the birth certificates from Basel.

With that certificate i went to the "Meldebehörde" and issued the "C" Permissions the same day for the children. Prior this,

The Health Insurance i informed the next day after the births and they did send to us congratulation letters and gifts about 2 weeks later

The Health Insurance report the "Mutterversicherung" and as far i do know they do report the "ZAS in Geneva" about the birth and we got this peace of plastic about 2-4 weeks later after the birth by post mail.

So all the time the same.

My husband I have different nationalities, we have to decide which one our baby will get. That's why they did not issue the residence permit right away. The decision has been made but we have to provide the passport to make it official.

I see, me and my wife do have 3 to offer together. Use an EC or EFTA if possible. Cheaper and more safe.

In our case, My birth certificates was delayed by 6 Months!! So in turn my daughters Birth certificate, passport and permit were as well delayed. AHV number is issued only after the Permit is ready as I understood. But the Insurance company sent me a letter confirming the coverage for the time before the Permit is ready.

I called the city hall today and it turns out they have the AHV Number already even though the passport therefore the residence permit wasn't issued yet.

So this contradicts my theory but at least we are one step further.
