I would like to know if its good to visit doctors in Universitispital or go to private doctor. I stay in Zurich and have medical insurance, but would like to go to place where it is cheap considering medical test / scans if any may be required. Thanks in advance for your inputs.
I have been treated (tests, checkups, ops, post op after care etc) in USZ and found the service to be fantastic. From what i have experienced the Swiss health care system is very good, and should I need to visit the hospital again, I wouldnt bother going private.
Remember the service you receive will differ according to your health insurance. For example, if you have private insurance you will have your own room.
There is a difference between the 2 products: if you go to let's say a public doctor's service at the hospital, sometimes you have to wait a long time to get your appointment; it is also possible that different doctors (= the ones on duty) will check you every time you go to the hospital.
By a private doctor, you may get the appointments much quicker and you'll have always the same doctor checking you; also, you may find a doctor quite near where you live or work, which might be more convenient...
While the University hospital is indeed excellent, the one major problem is that the doctors change regularly. I had a few good experiences with one but then she moved on and the ones that followed were no where near as good in any way.
You can find also that some are extremely arrogant. As they are not yet fully fledged they may refer you case to the professor under whom they are. He or she in turn will tell them what to do but it is not always clear if they themselves understand or challenge that professor. I would recommend private but always beware that medicine is a business and as such the same goes "let the buyer beware".
I have had to go to the University Hospital in Basel and I have to say their service is wonderful. The first time I had to wait a lot but the doctor was extremely helpfun and patietn and the english Perfect! The second time I did not wait at all and the service again was incredible!
The tariffs are standardized. Out-patients pay the same whether at a GP or in a University Hospital. The UniSpital may however do more complex tests, e.g. MRI, which are more expensive.
