Hello everyone !
I am moving in Zurich area in September with my dog (and my husband but I heard Switzerland was very husband friendly so no problem with him ). She is a 6 years old labrador/bordercollie mixed dog, who loves running, especially if there is a ball involved. She is well socialized with dogs, not aggressive at all yet a bit shy with humans. Very obedient.
I know that some place around Zurich are more suitable than others for dogs. Would EF dog owners have some tips about where to live ? Any dog friendly city with good dogs walks around where we wouldn't sdisturb anyone ?
Thank you very much ! That would really help me finding the best place for her !
This depends how far from the centre of Zurich you want to be...
For me the most dog friendly areas are up in around Birmensdorf and Aesch or into Canton AG, lots of open hills and woods etc. However.... Some areas of AG you would find isolated and the people can be well, lets face it odd...
I moved down Zurichsee a bit and am near Wadenswil and there are some great areas here but not quite by opening your front door, still nothing a very brief car ride won't solve.
In essence it is a balance; the more country life, open area orientated the more isolated you could feel from friendly "normal Swiss" and expats and the closer to the "you should speak Swiss German, we've owned this land for generations" odd ball stuck in their ways farming community!
Thank you very much for your quick answer ! We are considering living around Zurich, with a 25/30 kms maximum distance.
You're so right, I think I'd rather stay with "normal swiss" and expats, I would be easier for every day life, especially if I work from home.
I guess staying around Zurich Lake should be fine !
Yeah, look from Horgan down. Horgan is a bit "blocky" for my liking, even tho I might be moving there soon LOL, but Langnau and the areas behind are nice, not right by the lake but near enough.
Also look at some of the "villages" a little further back... I am in Samstagern and to me it has the best of the open area whilst still being only 10mins from Wadi and Zurichsee. In fact it is also quicker to get here from the Autobahn than into any of the lakeside towns.
Schonenberg and Hirzel just behind me might be worth a look too, lovely little areas.
Of course everything depends on what sort of dwelling you're after, renting or buying and budget.
Thanks ! I'll look for flat offers in those areas.
We'll be in CH for 3 years so we"ll be definitely renting. And we have a 1600CHF maximum budget.
Thanks again !
Within Zurich city itself, stay in areas like Wipkingen which is close to the Limmat River. There are beautiful dog friendly trails that go on for quite a bit where you can walk the dog. Another area is Höngg where I lived initially in the city. Its near the ETH and Kafferberg forest where walking trails aplenty as well as a forest.
1600CHF is going to be a bit of a stretch for these areas within the city so do consider other places like Seebach, Schwamendingen (sorry, bad spelling) - around the Kreis 11 and 12 area where housing isnt as expensive and walking trails are still available. Good luck in your search and a welcome in advance from a fellow dog owner!
My "where to live" list is getting bigger ! Thank you very much !!
At the 1600 mark the most important thing is to look at the blocks' in those areas animal policies, some are a lot more strict than others You also need to get on google street walk maps and see if there is a local "loop" for the day to day quick business as well as the fun further areas.
As you will see on the forum a lot of members are recently falling prey to neighbour problems when the dog is taking a leak on the lawn outside Frau Getumitsomthingtomoanabt's window box!
p.s you should look at Richterswil too
Dog friendly housing exists, though it is becoming more difficult to find. You cannot have it all, as they say. With a budget of 1600 I would say you may have to look well outside of Zürich. This does not mean you have to be isolated and live in a very remote area.
Hey,
I live in Pfäffikon, ZH. Moved here a month ago with our two Labs. We have a forest on our doorstep and its very dog freindly around here.
We are outside Zurich, but a 30 min train ride away. I think that is reasonable especially if you do have a dog.
