Dog Stripping

Hey Forum-folk!

I have a wire-haired Viszla (Labrador sized) and instead of cutting her hair, in order to maintain her coat, we have to strip it.

I live in the Zürich area, does anyone know if there's a groomers that provides this service yet doesn't cost the earth?

Thanks in advance!

Eek. I had to (hesitantly) Google that term to see what that means, exactly. Must say I'm relieved that it appears to cause the dogs no pain.

Sorry, I can't point you in any directions, but apparently there is some kind of hand tool you can buy for that(?).

Side note -- my dad has a Vizla. Gorgeous dog, but it's the most neurotic and possessive dog I've ever known. I hope yours is more well-behaved than my dad's is.

Hi.there is a wonderful woman at the Dolly Hund Salon at Werd, just on the corner from Fust.Im sure she can help you.

Good luck

I don't know if good and cheap go well together in this respect. The technique is rather easy to perform yourself, if you want as cheap as can be. All you need, as an outlay is a stripping knife. You can find them on google and they are not expensive. You can do it between your finger and thumb but with a bigger dog your hand will soon get sore. All you need to do is use the knife to "cut" but as something to hold the hair against as you pull it out in the direction the coat grows.

Start at the neck and work down the back towards the tail, following the shape of the dog pull out the longer, bristle top coat, leaving the softer undercoat. It comes out rather easily. You just need to decide how you want the legs, chest and skirt. You can use scissors to blend this into the stripped part.

Have a go! It can be fun...
