Dog Travel from Switzerland to France

Hi,

I live in Geneva so just 10 minutes away from France. Can someone advise if I can travel to France freely with a dog if I have all the necessary paperwork?

I travel frequently to France with my dog. All i have with me is his passport. So far no problems at all. Well ok we were never checked but the vet said his passport is enough

just need to make sure you have his passport with you...

As long as your dog is not a banned/restricted breed, travel through France is easy-peasy.

You need your EU pet passport, the dogs must be chipped or tatoo'd and vacs up to date - that's it.

We frequently cross at Basel and have never been stopped for a document check, despite the fact that as the mutts are barking their fool heads off we obviously have a carload of canines.

But best to be prepared, and have your docs up to date.

FYI, rules for importing a pet into France:

I wouldn't recommend this course of action but last year I took Fenris with me Strasbourg and didn't realise I'd completely forgotten his passport until I was well on my way back - it wasn't a problem, nobody was interested

Theoretically it should not be a problem.

Having forced all EU dog owners to have their dogs chipped (or tattoed) then the border guards should be equipped with chip readers

Carrying paper passports is archaic.....

Otherwise what is the point of chipping? To make life more luxurious for vets?

You need your docs because the chip doesn't store vaccination data - at least, when I put my guy's numbers into the ANIS and TASSO databases vax info wasn't available to me, a mere mortal. (Perhaps 'professionals' have access to the full file?) In any event, controlling rabies is - at least in theory - one of the things that the border check is supposed to do.

Of course, it would be fairly easy to encode that bit of info...

But, while all EU compliant chips should be readable by an EU type scanner, there are different databases in each country. Now, there are consolidation sites, such as PETMAXX, but still, finding info from any one of the many EU sites would be a bit clumsy.

Yes but if they do not have a chip reader then how do they know your dog passport is for your dog?

& I suppose anybody could write vaccination data in the dog passport?
