A dog teaches a child about responsibility and loyalty, and there's few greater sights than a dog who follows his family's children everywhere.
If you do choose a cat, check out a Maine Coon. They're the closest cat to a dog, love water and are very talkative. I looked after one for several months last year whilst her owner (my neighbour) was recovering from chemo. Amazing creature with a great personality and I hated leaving her behind.
OP, I'm guessing you've no idea of the requirements (both legally and from the animal's perspective) for keeping a pet in Switzerland — am I right? Before you ask a question like "which is better", check out the hundreds of threads on EF on pet ownership, especially those dealing with regulations for dog ownership. Then think about how much space you have at home, then how much time you have to dedicate to a pet. Then consider the cost... potential allergies... personal preferences... your potential situation 15-25 years from now.
We have both. However, in your case the correct answer is a pair of lizards.

Depends entirely on the individual animal. There are plenty of dangerous, unsociable dogs, and plenty of loving, affectionate cats. Our Burmese kitten (like every Burmese I've had) sticks to his humans like glue and is very playful. He gets along with our dog like a house on fire.
Do you own it or are you renting? Are pets allowed?
Will the dog/cat have access to the outside?
How old are the kids?
Is somebody at home during the day or will the animal be alone for long periods?

Dog owners in Switzerland are required to do the SKN course so you'll have to do the theory part before you get a dog and the or actual part afterwards.
They prefer you to have two cats rather than one here especially if they are indoor cats and alone for long periods if the owners are out at work all day.
Both types of animals are a big responsibility. A dog will need to be taken out for walks a couple if times a day as a minimum. Cats are more independent but can also be extremely affectionate too.
We have a cat. We always had cats at home when I was growing up and we have had a cat since my son was about four. He loves it to bits and the cat adores him. Not all cats are like this but not all dogs are suitable for children either.

Grew up with dogs and now have 4 cats. Both of them puke anywhere they want, leave hair everywhere, wake you up, expect you to entertain them, feed them etc. and being an idiot I do everything they want.
