Yet again a poor dog has died, another is seriously ill, after having been left in a car during a heatwave.
However, there is a twist to this story: The car was in an underground garage.
Many people think that an underground garage would be cool enough to safely leave dogs, but one cannot count on that. Especially during a heatwave.

A couple attending a festival in Montreux left their two Huskies in the car, parked in an underground garage. A passer-by noticed that a dog in distress, notified the police , The police broke into the car and were able to save one severely dehydrated dog - but help came too late for the second, he was found dead in the car.
The surviving dog has been seized and is now in the care of the SPVA. Criminal charges against the owners have been filed.
So let’s add this to our seasonal PSA about dogs in cars: Even underground garages are not safe during a heatwave. People, please: do not leave your dogs in the car in the summer, no matter where the car is. The risk of overheating - anywhere - is simply too great. Just. Don’t. Do. It.
Am I the only one who wishes people like this could be barred from ever owning a pet again? Imagine you were sitting for hours in a hot car with a heavy fur coat on. What a sad, sad tale. I hope the survivor finds a loving and thoughtful home. Even fairly low temps can cause heat build-up in a car.
It is mostly the stupidity of the couple.
I do not know the every single detail of the incident, but it is the temperature inside the car which matters most (dogs locked inside the car), instead of cool garage outside of the car.
The couple then attended a festival, which I believe might last some hours, during which the dogs did not have fresh air and water, and the temperature inside the car may be hot.
Recently, a mother in the US carelessly left her kid inside a car, then found dead.
Some years ago, a father, also in US, left his kid inside a car and left for many hours. The kid found dead, but this was an intentional murder.
Now what is waiting for the couple is a criminal proceeding, which I believe is far more serious than ban of having a pet.
Even if it were cold: Keeping two huskies in a car for several hours is not appropriate. I really wish that there were more hurdles for prospective dog owners. Basically at the same level as required by shelters that are rehoming a dog.
The Taliban found this an incredibly cheap way of killing their prisoners,
They would put them in shipping containers in the Afghan desert, leave them for about 10 hours and the prisoners were cooked to death.
I mean, why bring the dogs in the first place if they’re just going to be stuck in the car the whole time? Leave them at home, in the care of a neighbour or just don’t go to the festival if neither of those works for you.

The couple are 25-26 years old. My impression is that they have not yet grown up and do not understand the seriousness of their action (their dogs' lives and legal consequences)

Reading this makes me so sad, angry, dismayed, at the absolute selfishness involved in this incident. I hope the owners are feeling absolutely beyond rock-bottom, and the consequences hit them hard and long.
I do not know if I have seen any here, but in Sweden a large number of shops/supermarkets post the sign issued by the agricultural authority that includes a chart of just how warm the inside of a car gets at eg 10c, 13c, 16c and upwards, not factoring in a duration longer than a few minutes, and not only 1 but 2 respirating animals generating their own heat...
It isn’t seldom I see dogs tied outside the store in the town where I live here, or the larger town down the tracks - not to mention the potential heartbreak of returning to find one’s beloved pet is gone, being left outside in full sun or even shade at current temps is not ok either.
I’m sure the couple are now pleading how much they loved and cared for their dogs
And don't even start me on those people who stroll along on a 30C day with their poor dogs padding along on the searing pavement. Growl!

A woman saw a dog ( a 4 month old Husky mix) locked in a car in the parking garage at Weil am Rhein. The car windows were closed. She thought the dog was in distress so she broke a window to rescue the dog.
The 23 year old owner of the dog maintains the dog was never in any danger. He says the dog was in the car for 20 minutes, the woman says it was 45 minutes.
The way I see it, the dog should never have been left in the car. If I saw a dog left in the car, would I do what it takes to rescue the animal or would I call for help and wait? Waiting could have terrible consequences.
Interesting, seems that you are allowed to break a window to rescue whatever is inside a car, but. First call the authorities, if they are not there in a certain time, get a witness and break a small window to minimize damage.

A husky dog has died after its owners left it and another dog in a car in an underground car park while they went to the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Police were called in the early hours of Saturday morning by a concerned passerby who’d seen a dog looking unwell in a locked car in a car park in Montreux. Police broke a window in the car to rescue the dog, which was severely dehydrated. It has been taken to a local dog rescue centre.
Officers also found a second Husky in the car, which had already died.
The dogs’ owners said that they had left their dogs in the car park as they thought that it would be cooler for them there than taking them into the crowds at the Jazz Festival. Criminal proceedings have been opened.
Dog owners are being reminded not to leave their pets alone in a car on a warm day as the temperature inside the car can be life threatening.
I would think that Huskies are very active dogs that need constant walking, tending.
I would also somehow assume that if you get a pair of huskies, these will be like small kids: they need constant attention and care.
You can’t potty-train them, they will never be able to feed themselves or walk themselves. It’s all on you.
So, I don’t really understand how people who work 100% can also have dogs?
As I said before: I’d fear that a dog would be bored to death sitting in my flat all day.
Can dogs “talk” to each other via FaceTime? Or do they get bored from “talking”, too, and just want to run around and play together?

AFAIK, in Tesla’s “Dog Mode”, the inside camera is not available remotely either.
Though I believe that feature, too, is only intended for a short run to the grocery store.
Anyway, there are no winners here: owners lose dogs, dog 1 lost his life, dog 2 probably traumatized for life. Owners probably traumatized, too.
