The man was sitting in front of me and made an effort to open the overhead bins every hour or so to check on the pup.
Hope that helps.
This is from DEFRA’s website:
Approved routes and transport companies
The following routes and transport companies may be used to bring pet dogs, cats and ferrets into the UK. On some air routes, registered assistance dogs may travel in the cabin. Other dogs, cats and ferrets will travel as cargo.
If it’s not an assistance dog, it should be in the cargo hold.
I was under the impression pets could never travel in cabin to the UK and Ireland, unless they are assistance animals. I'd be happy to have an option to fly. We were planning to drive to Scotland in April. Not looking forward to that!
There certainly are plenty of other routes where pets can travel in cabin.
This is from jet2 website: With the exception of registered guide dogs accompanying a person with seeing or hearing disabilities, no animals are permitted to be carried in the aircraft cabin. Subject to availability, Jet2.com may carry guide dogs free of charge on UK domestic flights, unfortunately this is not currently a service we are able to offer on international flights. Flights must be booked through our Call Centre so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
Yes, that is for travel to the UK. Only assistance dogs can go in the cabin, everything else has to go cargo.
You’d have to fly into Biggin Hill with most of the charter airlines. A few do Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester, but most are Biggin Hill only. There’s a PDF for approved charter companies on the DEFRA website.
And for those of you rich enough:
You are not permitted to bring a pet into the UK on a private boat or plane from outside the UK.
So much for the richies bringing their pampered pets in on their LearJet or yacht. I’m sure some people try though.
Please note only approved carriers and routes may be used to avoid quarantine,
Because I've often see cats and dogs traveling in cabin in a TAP flight to Portugal. And I know several companies allow them providing they are under a certain weight and you book them specifically.
The UK has now harmonized it's entry requirements to EU norms, but still controls the routes a dog or cat must take to enter the country.

As always, check with the destination country for specific import requirements, and check with the airline for in-cabin vs. cargo rules. (Which for many airlines is that pets under 8kg including travel crate are allowed in cabin.)
It was successful, too.
Passenger hired a private plane at GBP15,000 and flew the mutt home again
Yes, that was in Animal Airport on Animal Planet iirc. The thing is, it probably worked out cheaper than the 6 months in quarantine. Not to mention being easier on the dog.
