A) you should have been able to contain the approach of your new friend. If he licks your face, alright, but his paws on your shoulders ? If your height is 170cms your shoulders are at 150cms.
B) I would not wear sandals when going to a meeting
C) I think that swans are beautiful, but clearly fear them . In Zürich, in the past school-children were advised how to deal with those dangerous birds
C-2) I once in Dakar "met" Pelicans. Those impressive and majestic birds are so nice and so polite and so friendly that I never felt any fear about them
Dear Wolli My height is 175cm. And dog is HUGE. Actually to be fair to the dog, I do sort-of know him - he sits under the Stammtisch when his owner is having a beer (and I happen to be there too), and I talk dog-language to him, telling him about my dogs I used to have, and how handsome he is. But this was the first time I`d met him when out walking - so it sort-of caught me by surprise!
And to be fair to the owner - since then he keeps a far distance from me when out walking. I actually think he got jealous when his dog gave me such an exuberant greeting?
B) Why not wear sandals in the middle of summer?..... Especially when invited to an Àpero and to sample good wines. (I`d even wear sandals to a Verein meeting) Obviously one defers to what sort of "meeting" one is attending.
They were brand new, red, closed heels, ankle strap, open toes with silver - very smart.
C) Yes, Swans are fearsome creatures! I once had to defend my tiny grandkids from an agressive one while they were playing on the banks of the Rhein - I stepped forth armed with a big thick branch swinging it like a gladiator. Swan decided to retreat. Whew, what relief!
C1) A Pelican I have never met. But any birds, no matter how small is agressive when defending it`s young, I think? Like most Mama creatures. I`ve seen tiny little sparrows attacking a snake trying to take their young in a tree!
A wooden post and slat fence, usually enough to mark a property boundary. Usually that is enough? Obviously not anymore, huh?

This is how I was taught to deal with swans...
