Downloading from ITV player - possible?

OK, so I used to think I was pretty tech savvy, but I realize, that compared to the average Swiss I am probably above average, but what is that really saying? One area where I am a bit fuzzy on is recording from the internet and watching things on my TV.

My cablecom box seems to have stopped recording my episodes of Downton Abbey from ITV halfway through season 4 which just finished this week - I think I am missing the last 4 (I have no idea why, we don't have a full disc...)

Anyways, I have a VPN that I can use and I could watch them on the computer - but the first one I would want to watch "expires" from the ITV site in 5 days and since I just started watching the first episode last night, I won't be ready to watch it yet then.

I would like to somehow save the file and then watch it on my tv at a later date. Is this possible? And then do I need to use playon to then watch it on my tv or if I can access my drive, is this unnecessary? Please forgive me if these are really basic and dumb questions... I have searched around a bit, but sometimes there is just too much info out there!

Referring to laptop/PC only (not app driven gadget) and using a VPN (as you say), I think it is only possible if ITV offer a download option to a desktop programm (sorry haven't used ITVPlayer for yonks).

For instance with iPlayer, you can download to BBC iPlayer Desktop and watch from offline at your leisure.

However, even with that, it's not permanent and will expire and disappear (normally 14-28 days).

If ITVPlayer doesn't offer the same, then I think you're shagged.

EDIT: just had a look on my lappy, and they seem to offer a rental for the entire job lot (99p a go), beyond the last four episodes, which are free for a limited time.

EDIT2: not to forget for future (too late for previous episodes), that you can record 20 programmes, available for 20 days, with Zattoo Free.

Thanks! I am peeved at myself that I didn't check that all the recordings were there - I saw it had been recording, so I don't know why I only have the first 4...maybe the description made them look like the same ones? Anyhow, I still have the first 4...

Edit: I see I can just order the DVD on amazon.co.uk - it may be lame, but then I won't have all the commercials to fast forward through . If only the discs were region free so I could then send them to my sister in the US once I'm finished with it

From the ITV player, only the last four are a available for watching for free, so your recording of only four may be related to that.

I think that covers everything Even in 720p....!

Isn't that from one of those dodgy spam links, posted last week?

I don't know - I set up the cablecom box to record all episodes, but I think it checks the info description so you don't get repeats, but the Downton episodes don't seem to have unique descriptions so maybe the box thought they were somehow the same?

We never had this problem when recording other series, like Game of Thrones, as they had the episode number and description in each week's show...

Oh well, at least there are some solutions! Time to pick the easiest

edit - now that I am sitting at the computer rather than my iPad, I found a youtube video about GETFLV (cnet review) that might just do what I am trying to do. Time for some more investigating!

Now, for the next question - does anyone know if you can access the cable box hard drive and burn shows to a disc? This is where I miss my old TiVo

I downloaded Downton from Kickass every Monday morning and watched it whilst drinking my coffee. And with no ads.

but I want it recorded so I can watch it at a later time when I am ready for it - can you do that? I haven't heard of Kickass, will have to check it out too.

If you've downloaded it, you can watch it at your leisure and as many times as you want.
