Drivers theory test in English

In Zurich at least you'll still be able to do it in English next year, I contacted them just last week and they confirmed that this is the case

does anyone know if it is at all possible to do the theory exam in english because i have found that you can go into driving schools and they will help you prepare for the exam in english yet the physical exam has to be in french, italian or german???

If anyone is looking for a "Driving Today" by Alfred Trachsler, I have one to sell. Its still new as I never got round to using it but it is not the latest but 2005 version. Im asking Sfr15 and I paid Sfr40 for it in Orrell Füssli Zurich, cheers

hi

i did my driving license two years ago in june. the verkehrskunde and nothilfe i had to do in german. for the verkehrsdunde a swiss friend of my accompained me to translate if i didnt understand something. i also did my theory in english, for the practise i bought driving today by Alfred Trachsler and i also bough Theoretikal Examinations English. Its both in english and german. i did my test in the third time and what i realised is for the practical test its better if you make an effort to speak a bit of german. (speak less as well). it helps.

i did theory two times, the first time it was on paper and in english and the second time was new on the computer and you could choose any language like german, french, italian, english and spanish (not sure)

i have the verhehrskunde books for all the 4 evenings (the course was done in 4 evenings) and also the other books i mentioned. if anyone wants to buy all three, i can give it for 50 chf.

cheers

Cheers

Where do I sign up to take the theory test in Zurich and to take driving lessons do I have to have the theory test completed?

As a resident of canton Zurich, you can take the theory test at the "Strassenverkehrsamt" (department of motor vehicles) in Winterthur or Zurich. Like you assume, it is a prerequisite for getting the learning license. The other prerequisite is an eyesight test, if I remember correctly. Have a look at the department's website or search the forum for further information, good luck.

lots of info here too... A lot of posts, but a quick scan will produce all the info you need.

Hi

Another good question! Does anyone out there know the answer?

Thanks for all the info so far, btw

Hi,

I too wanted to take my driving test last year in october but did not. I was told thet the eglish version is nolonger provided since Jan 2008. You can only do it in German, French or Italian.

I have to learn the language yet . Good luck.

I would say -- it depends on whether the examiner speaks English or not. In Geneva you can not choose the examiner and generally they speak French only, but of course there is always a certain probability that you find an examiner who is comfortable enough with English and is willing to speak it during the test.

My examiner was very silent and gave me very brief instructions, so even with a quite basic level of French you can manage. If you turn left and not right as instructed once or twice, you can always say that you misunderstood and it will not be taken against you. Good driving skills and confidence, which were definitely not there in my case, will not easily be lost in translation.

I did the theory test in German.

I saw the test in English, but found it wasn't so accurately translated and could lead to misunderstanding the questions and so.

But of course, if you speak no German/French/Italian, then you have no other options. Just watch out for "language pitfalls".

The actual driving test itself is no problem if you can speak basic German.

The worst thing is the instructor you get on the day.

Nice young man - flexible and friendly -or - grumpy old git - frightening in the extreme........

My istructor speaks very good engligh and the driving part is not a problem for me. I have a driving licens from home which is not accepted here. The theory part is the problem. I am in the german part of wallis and I understand aliitle when someone speaks high german. The Wallis german is all together a diferent language. I have a CD with english and german, so I try to translate and is helping but very slow. Or I should say I am the slow one .

You can still take drivers theory test in English in Bern

Do it fast... Soon it will be impossible.

Thank you so much for the tip, am going to conterct them tommorow monday.

Good luck ladybird!

Don't forget you have to do the first-aid course before doing the theory test
