i did my driving license two years ago in june. the verkehrskunde and nothilfe i had to do in german. for the verkehrsdunde a swiss friend of my accompained me to translate if i didnt understand something. i also did my theory in english, for the practise i bought driving today by Alfred Trachsler and i also bough Theoretikal Examinations English. Its both in english and german. i did my test in the third time and what i realised is for the practical test its better if you make an effort to speak a bit of german. (speak less as well). it helps.
i did theory two times, the first time it was on paper and in english and the second time was new on the computer and you could choose any language like german, french, italian, english and spanish (not sure)
i have the verhehrskunde books for all the 4 evenings (the course was done in 4 evenings) and also the other books i mentioned. if anyone wants to buy all three, i can give it for 50 chf.
cheers

I also have 2 copies of the "Driving Today" booklet for Fr 5 each if anyone after a copy.

[[Drivers licence] Conversion and questions](http://www.englishforum.ch/transportation-driving/5770-drivers-licence-conversion-questions.html)
I'm quite keen to know the answer to this one too, especially in the Zurich area. Any ideas, anyone?
u most certainly can do it in english here. i did it too, 3 years ago.
go on Strassenverkehrsamt and check it out.
cheers and good luck.
Another good question! Does anyone out there know the answer?
Thanks for all the info so far, btw
I too wanted to take my driving test last year in october but did not. I was told thet the eglish version is nolonger provided since Jan 2008. You can only do it in German, French or Italian.
I have to learn the language yet . Good luck.
My examiner was very silent and gave me very brief instructions, so even with a quite basic level of French you can manage. If you turn left and not right as instructed once or twice, you can always say that you misunderstood and it will not be taken against you. Good driving skills and confidence, which were definitely not there in my case, will not easily be lost in translation.
I saw the test in English, but found it wasn't so accurately translated and could lead to misunderstanding the questions and so.
But of course, if you speak no German/French/Italian, then you have no other options. Just watch out for "language pitfalls".
The actual driving test itself is no problem if you can speak basic German.
The worst thing is the instructor you get on the day.
Nice young man - flexible and friendly -or - grumpy old git - frightening in the extreme........
Do it fast... Soon it will be impossible.
Don't forget you have to do the first-aid course before doing the theory test
