Duplicate key

Hi there,

Does anyone out there know where I can duplicate my flat key at a cheap rate in Zurich? For some reason, I have to pay 60 CHF for getting a spare one from my super. So if anyone out there has a place where I can make a duplicate for a cheaper price, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Matt

Is it Kaba?

I bought a duplicate security key at cost price in Bern, it was Fr 53,--

I dont understand what you mean by kaba.. I am sorry...

The type of key.....should be written on it

Well I would like it to be a bit cheaper than 53 Fr. May be something like 20 Fr. But I guess I wouldn't have a choice in the matter 'cause its Switzerland..

Yes it is Kaba as a matter of fact.. I didnt notice it until now.. Well..Do you have any ideas?

Yes. They are tightly controlled and registered. Suck it up, I'm afraid

Well Thanks anyways...

Did you only receive 1 key to the flat? It is rare that someone does not have at least 2 keys.

Before you are asked to cough up money for a key you should ask the property manager for confirmation of how many keys exist. Some models of Kaba keys are controlled so the owner has a card and each time a key is made it is recorded on the card.

Insurance policies are very clear that if you cannot account for the whereabouts of all the keys to your flat, if there is no sign of a break in but there was a robbery, you may not be properly insured.

It is not surprising that property managers/owners often locate previously "missing" keys when a tenant starts to ask questions about the Kaba card and requests confirmation for the insurance company confirming the number of keys.

Well I just need a spare key for my flat in case I lose my original. Its not an emergency or anything like that. So I guess I just need to figure out I should spend an extra 60 Fr for a new one or just be extra careful not to lose my original..

Rumour has it *cough* that very dodgy third world countries will cut Kaba keys no questions asked.

France for one.

We own our house, and CHF 60 was about what duplicate keys cost when you have the right paperwork. So I'd say go with the legal option.

I think if you lose the original you will be looking at a lot more than 60 francs for a single replacement...

At our old building they told us if we lost a key it would cost us 1000 CHF.

I can confirm that this is true. About the rumour, I mean, obviously.

Cos they'd need to replace all the locks, presumably.

That is to cover the cost of changing the cylinder and replacement keys.

The costs do vary between the various lock companies. It also depends on how many cylinders need replacing and how many keys to be replaced.

But I suspect in the OP's case that he is NOT in possession of the only key.

Don't forget the UK !

I agree with this. If the OP really did only receive one key for his flat then his first course of action should be to contact the agency/landlord and ask them to provide him with a second key.

It is really unusual to only receive one key for a rental apartment.
