Early morning plane landings around Zumikon

Hi,

Does anyone else also get annoyed or waken up early mornings by the huge longhaul flight landings starting from 6am?

I’ve heard from friends that there will some air traffic, but didnt come to tent nearthe apartment to measure how is the level at 6 :/

Any experience? i see Kloten airport has a fund to help (isolating blinders etc)

But officially I guess it’s just for Dubendorf etc.

our point for moving was to sleep at open windows in summer :/

The south approach issue has long been a discussion - I lived on the that side of the lake 15 years ago when the 'Sudanflug Nein' campaign was in full swing.

But one needs to understand: The planes follow that path because of a negotiated soltuion with Germany. This is highly unlikely to change. It's just something you have to live with for the convenience of a world class airport nearby.

I was always amused at my neighbors who were active in the Sudanflug Nein campaign, global high fliers most of them, jetting off to far flung part of the world weekly in pursuit of yet another billion dollar deal, landing at Kloten, limo-ing home to the Gold Coast... then complaining about the very airport that helped them get where they needed to go to do the work that financed the lakeside villa.

Honestly, I was never bothered by the planes. After a while you don't even notice them anymore, it becomes background noise. Soon the pleasant tinkling cowbells outside your window will form the basic music of your life.

Focus on the other wonderful things the Gold Coast has to offer, soon the early planes will not even register. You might even try the really Swiss thing: Get up at 5, enjoy the sunrise over the lake, then go hike the Pfannensteil - a great way to start your day.

If it continues to bother you, try a white noise machine... or the drastic solution: move. Because the planes will continue flying over the lake.

All the best...

Thx, see tour point!

unfortunately I’m not one of them, just someone who decided to commute more and get out of the buzz @Hardbrucke.

If I were one of those guys I wouldnt complain, also the high rent wouldnt be so painfull..

(sorry for the typos-s: early korning frustration mode on mobile, while was trying to sleep back )

I lived my first years near the airport. The jets of those days were a lot noisier than modern ones. Whenever friends came to visit us, they would say 'how on earth can you live in a place like this' and we would go 'eh? Ah, anothre plane, did'nt notice it'

I think, you'll get used to it pretty soon. And these planes are only landing, engines near idle, it's likely just you not being used to the sounds of a city. I would be more concerned about herbs/veggies in my garden, if they dump extra fuel over your heads. I don't know, though, where they usually do that.

I'm sure they do, but it's not restricted to entitled Gold-coasters. All over the world there are people who choose - for reasons of convenience, views, trendiness or whatever - to live under airport approach paths, then start complaining about the noise.

There is a very simple answer - if it bothers you so much go and live somewhere else.

They don't. These days it's not allowed Swiss A330 to Newark EWR circles 5 hours in the air before returning to Zurich LX18

We used to live in Zollikerberg and saw the aircraft every morning, but you barely heard them.

If you have the Windows open you'll hear more noise from Forchstrasse.

It depends where you live in Zumikon.

We lived 3.5 miles west of Heathrow, and when I say we were right on the departures flight path, I mean the A380s used to turn left over our bathroom, and Thai Airways had a near miss with our chimney stack. We reguarly had cargo flights pass overhead until 2.30am, then it all began again at 5am.

OH was working continental 12hr shifts at the airport, and the solution to our noise issue was thermal blackout curtains. I don't pretend to know the science behind it, but they almost completely deadened the noise and he managed to sleep like a baby all day when he was on nights. Just to give you an idea, this crappy photo was taken from our front door step on my phone, of an A380 coming in to land. The tree was in our garden.

From Zollikerberg you only notice the airplains if you are actually paying attention to SEE how they are descending. Otherwise, one can barely notice them, it's just background noise.

I realized that there’s huge difference between if you are just under their path or even 5-600m aside (so from Zollikerberg looking at the map from airport it can be much more the nice view than engines)

sorry but I also feel a little hatred in some replies:

- zumikon is not part of gold-coast as far as I know, nowhere close to the lake

- I’m not owning a villa here, rented an apt to get away from city noise to start a family

- topic group is about ‘complains’ fyi

Yes, really wise answer that I can move - never thought about it

Great, that so many ppl are thankfull for it

Thx for the positive experiences, we have to live with it for sure

Hatred?? Oh my...............

No hatred here, but what I hate is to break the news for you: Zumikon is for all practical purposes an integral part of the Gold Coast, despite of not having direct access to the lake.

I lived under the flight path for Basel aiport.

Never got used to it, moved a couple of miles away, still hear the planes from here but now it's not obtrusive.

There are no solutions to the noise in the summer if you want to open your windows or use the balcony, so you either live with this blight or move on.

Or you look on the plus side.

I got some cool aerial footage of our house when we were coming in to land at LHR. Also, a regular feature which our house guests enjoyed...Saturday morning having breakfast in the front courtyard and waving at the passengers to see which flights waved back. The kids loved that. Free wifi when the A380's or Dreamliners passed over. Sitting in the beer garden our village pub, Five Bells at Horton (which I believe is the Horton Arms now) watching 8 planes approaching in a line.

Downsides... Driving home at night when it you think you see distant headlights coming down the dark, country lane, then realise it's a plane. Having an evacuation plan. Praying that a plane doesn't land short right on Jct 14 of the M25. Not fully realising how polluted the air was until you spend the first 3 weeks in Zurich pulling black gunk out of your nose. Staying at the NH in Opfikon and feeling 'at home' because the A380 flies low over there too.

biggest pain point is jealousy

Those guys will land in 2mins, while I have to drive at least 30-40 mins to my office in Kloten.

I love planes! but for plane spotting we have an office overlooking the runway

Hoped that can get away from planes at least for the rest of the day..

Nah, don't flatter us.

Just some eye-rolling.

We did a few reconnaissance missions early, later, weekend etc on prospective apartments.

Amazing things you can discover: the building site for a new school opposite an apartment that wasn't mentioned for example in one case. Or flight paths to the local airport.

Hmm, working at the airport and not knowing the flight paths might be considered a rookie mistake, but he, happens to the best of us

Not all aircraft have the equipment necessary to vent fuel. Those that do will do it at least 30,000 feet and it dissipates long before reaching the ground.

The weight of the fuel in the wings makes an overweight landing unsafe, but sometimes it is safer to land overweight than to continue flying.

Nah, he probably only works in Balsberg. Have fun with the Thai flight after midday

...tell me about it.
