Effective room height after installing dropped ceiling

Hi. We are now designing our new appartment. The original ceiling height is 250 cm in all pieces. And we'd like to install dropped ceiling in the living room (because we want LED there), but not in other rooms. The architect told me that the "thickness" of the suspended ceiling will be 8 cm.

This means that in our living room (40 m2) the effective height will be 250-8=242 cm. Is that a bit too low?

Thanks in advance for your opinion!

Too low for what? Your height?

No.

Tom

Too low so that we have an impression of "écrasement".

My height is 178cm.

I just measured the ceiling height of my current apartment, it is 255 cm, and I feel totally comfortable with that. And the new one will be 13 cm less...

It sticks in my head that some particular piece of common IKEA furniture (a wardrobe? a bookshelf?) is 243cm tall when assembled. So if your living room plans include one of those, 242 is definitely too low.

Otherwise... why would that be too low? Too low for what?

Ceilings in our house range from 210ish (in the library) to 173 (under the middle of a majestically bowed old joist in our bedroom). And several doorways are lower than that... but if you live in a place you quickly get used to its little quirks.

The common modern appartment in Switzerland has a finished room height of 2,40 to 2,45 cm.

Will you notice the difference between 2.42 and 2.50? Depends how crazy you are. I was born and raised in a place where the normal room height is about 2.80, so even after 10 years I notice very clearly any difference.

Also ends up comically when I have a client requesting rooms with a "gorgeous height", and my ex-boss planned the unbelievable room height of 2.80... The wow factor was totally ...

The ceilings of my house in England are all 240cms, I don't have a problem when I'm actually there but definitely feel less 'enclosed' when I get back to the ones here that are 270cms.

I'm 165cms tall, my sons are both ~180 and definitely feel the same sense of relief living with higher ceilings.

Room height is very important to feel well in a room. 2.40 is too low in my opinion. We have 2.40 in the TV snug and a bedroom which is fine. All the rest is 2.80.

I would not sacrifice room height for a few spots...

I personally agree with this, but that is a personal preference. There are cabinets that are in the 2.40 range, so it depends on what you want in the room.

I do like recessed lights though. I just had this same work done to my bedroom and bath renovation. The carpenter needed to mount 8cm wooden slats, followed by 1.8cm plaster boards. Round holes were cut for the recessed lights.

I'm going for halogen light fixtures, which will require about 8cm of depth. there are thinner LED fixtures that don't require as much depth.

The 8cm for the recessed lights sounds like it is for halogen bulbs. There are thinner profile LED lights.

244 (8') is standard in the US.

The ceilings here (Trieste) are 360!

Makes changing the bulbs in the ceiling lamps a real bitch!

Our house is 220 throughout the ground floor...

EDIT. Just measured it. It`s 235.

Ours are all 2.40m and we don't find that to be too low at all. My husband is 1.86m and youngest son is 1.94cm and they're both perfectly happy with it.

I think there is more to be considered than room height myself. How big is the room overall and how much light is there? A large room with big windows and lots of light will seem totally different to a smaller, darker room with identical ceiling height.
