EKZ Zürich electricity pricing

EKZ announced a price reduction in 2025 of 13% less than 2024.

My forecast 2025 electricity price is around 150% of my 2022 bill.
Since Switzerland does not use gas or coal or oil to produce electricity then it is hard to understand why the price is so high

As Switzerland is interconnected with neighbouring markets, the Swiss market price usually sits somewhere between the German, French and Italian prices.

Also, Switzerland imports electricity at various times of the year. Another thing was that the companies also do hedging and energy trading. I think one had a particularly bad trade that increased prices.

If by “my forecast” you mean EKZ’s predicted cost from their website, I have found these to be wildly over estimated…

Even with the price reduction they announced, it feels like electricity bills are still way higher than they used to be.

Usually mid-October I get my EKZ bill for the 2nd quarter but here we are in November and no bill yet.
I have no objections if they never send it.

I never get a bill from EKZ - but my bank does. I download the bill from my EKZ account…

I get my bill online via the eBill system, I checked myEKZ account, and not yet there.

My 3rd quarter bill (July, August, September) is dated 17-10-2024…

My bills

Life is not simple when one is old and dumb.

I called EKZ and asked where is my bill.
They replied if I check my last bill I will see a note that the next bill will be a month late.
Duh!

In my defense, I never look at my bills. I get ebills that my bank automatically pays and I only check my bill if the amount is significantly different from what I eypect.

I don’t read text on my bills either

You better check this one when it comes, they seem to have billing/counter problems and they knew that in advance.

EKZ have their 2026 prices on the website. It’s complicated but in all not bad news.

High and low tariffs are gone and now quarters 1 and 4 cost more than quarters 2 and 3. (25.93rp and 21.77rp)
Comparing high tariffs Q1 and 4 are about 8% cheaper than 2025 but only 3.5% cheaper than 2025 low tariff.
While Q2&3 are 28% and 19% lower.

The sting is those of us with solar panels. The whole of Switzerland will now get the same deal all dependant on the spot price of electricity average per quarter. EKZ guarantee 9.0rp whatever the spot price is. This compares to 15.60 HT and 14.60 NT for 2025.

Weird. Because it’s darker and people use heat pumps?
Making the most of supply and demand, on the other hand that was the same with high and low tariffs.

Winterthur has also announced planning to scratch these. I wonder how this will turn out (they are not a customer friendly bunch). While I do make use of low tariff (washing machine, dishwasher, sometimes even oven if it’s bread for example) I don’t really mind not checking the clock for such activities anymore.

edit: naa, Winterthur sticks to the high/low tariff. They make more money on all the stuff around it than the electricity. Can I go pick mine up personally?

More demand (heating, lighting, etc.) AND less supply, particularly solar.

Round where I live they dropped the night tariff severay years ago.

Q1 and 4 are winter months October - April incl. Thus it’s more in the winter.

The current (!) EKZ low tariff is only 4.8% belwo high tariff and so not a massive advantage.

I got an email from them a couple of days ago

“Our customers in the EKZ supply area can look forward to an average reduction of 11 percent: starting in 2026, EKZ electricity tariffs will be reduced by 11 percent.
For a typical three-person household with an annual consumption of 2,500 kWh (ElCom H2 profile), this represents a saving of approximately CHF 90 per year.
This makes our electricity tariffs among the most affordable in Switzerland.”

Hmmm..

Still significantly higher than it was a couple of years ago.

We use between 8,500 and 9,000 kWh per year…

you got electric cars, right?

Yes 2. But low kms and we try to charge them on sunny days! Our electricty usage has actually declreased over the last 10 years - pre EVs…
