Does anyone know of a router I could get from Fust or Interdiscout that allows for end VPN?
Basically, I want a router that pop's a non Swiss IP (but configured for my UK VPN IP) so I can get BBC iPlayer on my PS3 as well as other wifi devices I have?
My thinking is to have two wire/wireless networks at home (connected to the same modem/router), one running at full speed with my local Swiss IP and the other a VPN with an UK IP so all I have to do is to switch network should I need to use the other on my handheld devices at home...
Basically you need a tomato compatible router, this will allow you to set up the VPN on the router. It uses something called DD-WRT (not techy enough to know what that is just know that's what it uses).
It's the DD-WRT that allows the VPN( I think).
Google "tomato router" or "DD-WRT" and that should give you some clues.
I have found a Netgear router (WNR2000) @ CHF 44.95 at Interdiscount that is on the OK list from DD-WRT and thought maybe this could do the trick? I gather I need to upload a specific firmware to get it to work right?
Otherwise, how much would the pre-supported VPN configurable ones set me back? I don't want to spend a lot of money on one...
So, got the Netgear router (WNR2000 @ CHF 44.95 at Interdiscount) but got home so late that I didn't have a chance to even unpack it from the box
Stupid SBB for cancelling trains even though they show up as departing as usual to then cancel 10 min before departure. Its not like they wouldn't know as the IC doesn't even stop between Geneva and Lausanne - Had to go via Payerne to get home which added 60 min journey time - Will open a new thread in the transport section...
Anyway, will try it out this evening and get back with my findings
Yep, it works. Took some time to get the Firmware over on the router through dd-wrt.com but got there eventually
So, I pay for a VPN service (USD 49 per year) which gives me access to a number of countries such as NL, SE, UK (multiple connections), US (multiple connections), and SK and speeds which are more than acceptable.
The setup on the router is pretty forward, but not knowing anything before I started I learned as I went along. A steep learning curve but great end product and worth the Saturday I spent.
Only problem I have now, Is that me iDevices can't hook up to the router while my Mac does. Keeps trying to obtain an IP but just won't get one... I'll eventually get there...
