English speakers Bern

Hello guys,

as i saw, the EF is mainly about Zurich and it's not fair for Berneeez

am I the only one who does not speak German in Bern ?!

what do people who don't speak well german do in Bern ?

cheers!

There are lot of people on here who don't live in Zürich.

Unlikely

I saw from a previous post that you're looking for work. What are you doing in Bern, did you come with your spouse, or are you studying?

.... Maybe you could learn German??

True; I came to Switzerland with my lovely swiss wife.

I'm still looking for a work so i thought mean while I can make some friends

and I am learning German atm in Migrosshule but I'm still far from being fluent

Q; is my post against the EF rules or smthin ?

Maybe make a German speaking friend... Then you can practice! Also use Duolingo.. It's a free language learning website/app.

Don't think so!

No, EF is NOT mainly about Zürich. But while CH has 7 mio people the Canton of Zürich has 1,3. This means that 1/6 of CH lives in ZH. And as Zürich long ago became the defacto economic and social Capital, the result is obvious

Damascus<> Bern ? You moved from one of the most beautiful cities on the planet (well, now subject to some reconstruction ) to another beautiful place. So, if you regularily contribute your experiences you can even improve EF. AND if you look at the social events etc you will see lots of Bernese contributions, And Fribourg/Freiburg and Neuchâtel (Neuenburg) are not that far from Bern

There apparently is a sizeable Arab community in Biel/Bienne. Dont have details, but my guess is that it is maily Lebanese and Syrian dialects they speak

I am not a EF Mod but suppose that your post is perfectly within the rules. Fluent `? Sure, in a few years time But for the time being, what counts is that you can communicate and that you can read texts

Welcome to Bern area. It is great that you are learning german but they speak mainly swiss german here. Many locals have problems speaking and understanding high germam, or perhaps they simply don't want to. You may find people here to be rude, reclusive or arrogant but they are simply very, very shy, almost like skittish cats. It may take years to make good friends here but if you have children it will be much faster. Don't rely on the usual facial, body and language cues you are used to. Don't be overly friendly or smiley at first, it tends to overwhelm them and they think it is fake or untrustworthy. Just be formal, polite and proper and gradually show them your warmth and openness so they don't scare off. The swiss can be wonderful but they are a bit like Siamese cats. They play hard to get and seem indifferent, but you can't help but love them! So welcome and don't be discouraged, it will all work out sooner or later!
