English Speaking Eye Doctor in Basel

Hi All,

We recently moved to Basel and we have health insurance with Sanitas. I need to see an eye doctor as I have either got an eye infection or something on the inside of my eye but it's killing me. I am very short sighted (-13) so at some point will need to go to the opticians for an eye test but right now I need an eye doctor and I have no idea how I go about finding one/booking an appointment or using health insurance.

I did search this forum first but could only find info on Opticians.

Any help appreciated

Yours Sincerely

Painful Eye

Nearly all doctors speak English.

Just ring up Sanitas and ask them how to go about it. The number will be on your health insurance card.

Worst case scenario, go to A&E, again, you won't have a problem only speaking English.

There is an eye clinic right inside SBB. http://www.augenzentrumbasel.ch/azb/de.html The reception also speaks English. They are very busy but there are several doctors so you should be able to make an appointment for perhaps the next day if the problem is urgent.

As a temporary measure to get some comfort you could ask in apothek for some drops (but think they don't sell the most effective chloraphenicol based Optrex type OTC). Hopefully it is not more than a pollen triggered allergic conjunctivitis, but also being short-sighted -15/-16 know what a PITA it is to rely on glasses instead of contact lenses until things clear up. Good luck

Hi,

we visit the international eye doctor of the Van Breda Insurance like others of BIZ, Novartis and Roche. He speaks good english and is nearby SBB. Frank M Sens, MD and opthalmologist. I think cause of reconstruction of the building in Gueterstrasse 180 his adress is Laufenstrasse 66, basel 4053 at the moment. phone 061 - 361 74 74. You can try him ...

Thanks everyone for all your replies!

It turned out this was a bit more serious and I ended up in the eye hospital for 3 nights! All better now and all the bills are dribbling through...
