Resurrecting this thread, as I am looking for an answer to the same question.
There are several English-speaking garages recommended in some threads here, but it's also clear that it would likely be much cheaper to get work done in Germany. Difficult to just roll into a mechanic in Germany though, as communication would be an issue.
Has anyone else managed to get work done near the border without much/any German?
edit: My car is a 2001 Ford Focus.
Do you know what needs fixing? Or just a general service?
I have always recommended Zurlinden - he speaks English - and is relatively cheap.
Unless you have a specific repair - can make an appointment, and wait with the car - Germany could be hassle.

Nothing specific, general service, but likely some work needed beyond the basics. Will also likely need some significant work done to get the car past Swiss standards test in the near future.
It is likely to be quite a hassle to go to Germany. Can you ballpark what the savings would be? If it's 20% probably not worth it at this point.
I will use this topic to ask the same question about Lausanne or France around Val Orbe. Any reliable, english speaking mechanic there? French would be a lot cheaper than Swiss...I need oil change and some general servicing for my old Volvo s40
