English Speaking Pediatrician in Zurich

My wife and I are relocating to Zurich in March for the better of 6 months to a year and we want to base our temporary housing close to a recommended english speaking pediatrician. We have an 8 week old and a 2 1/2 year old; both of which will need immunizations during our time here.

I will be working in Oerlikon so if anyone knows or recommends a pediatrician here, in Zurich, or Seefeld please let me know.

I don't live in Zurich so I can't give any personal recommendations. The US Embassy's site ( http://bern.usembassy.gov/zurich2.html ) provided a link to an outside commercial list. Here's the page listing pediatricians in Zurich city, but it doesn't say what languages they speak:

The American Club of Zurich also gives the the names of three English-speaking doctors, none of them pædiatricians. Maybe you could call them and ask if they could recommend anyone?

Ours in Seefeld is very good:

Praxis Dr. Urs Müller or Dr Harald Schütze

Feldeggstrasse 32, 8008 Zürich

Tel: 044 387 58 00

Fax: 044 387 58 09

We have been going to Dr. Heinrich Haldi in Wallisellen ( next suburb to Wallisellen ) since 2002 , when our son was born . He speaks fluent English and is fantastic with kids , to the extent where my son actually looks forward to visiting the clinic . The details are as follows :

Dr.Med. Heinrich Haldi

Zielackerstrasse 5

8304 Wallisellen

Tel : 044 830 6272

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I'll look into all of your suggestions!

The parenting magazine NEW STORK TIMES has got a list on their website with info about english speaking medical practitioners and midwifes etc.

The list was assembled according to personal recommendation by us writers or the readers and it still needs more input,so do tell us if you know someone you want to see added to it!

Hi,

I will move to Zürich (Höngh) with my 4 weeks old baby and girlfriend next week. We would like to take him to a english speaking pediatrician. Does anybody have any tips? Appreciate all help

Thanks

We are very happy with Dr Schams at the Hirslanden Klinik.

Dr. Kerstin Berger is very good, and I suppose her colleagues at the Kinderpraxis Oerlikon as well:

Thank you! I just looked up Dr. Schams--very impressive!!! We are moving to that area in 2 weeks & will need a pediatrician for our 9 month old & 3 year old while we are living in Zurich for a year. Thank you, thank you~I absolutely LOVE this forum, it's been such a lifesaver for our move!!

We're very happy with Dr Issler in Zollikon. He's very good and speaks Italian in addition to speaking English.

Just an update: Dr Schams is no longer accepting new patients

We ended up seeing Dr. Harald Schutze during our 9 month stay in Zurich & he was fabulous!!! Both of my kids LOVED going there. Everyone was so nice & understanding with all of our questions. We never felt rushed & never felt like we were treated any differently because we were from the US.

I highly recommend Dr Schutze in Seefeld

I've taken my kids to 2 different children's doctors, and in addition to the children's hospital in Zürich, and every doctor has always spoken enough english to get our things sorted out. Some nurses and receptionists might struggle, but normally the doctors always speak english. Some better some worse, but always "enough".

It's more the other things that matter to us, how clean it is, how is the access (parking lots etc). And don't underestimate the children, my son just loves the place which has airplane -seats in the waiting room, the other one, not so much. :-)

Hi everyone

We are recent arrivals to Switzerland and live in Truttikon, about ten minutes equidistant from Winterthur and Schaffhausen. I am looking for a pediatrician for my three year old, preferably one who speaks english since we have all his US records. Does anyone know of a good pediatrician in Winterthur?

Thank you

Just to let people know, we tried to see any doctor in this practice, and they were not seeing any new patients. Also, they recommended a doctor whom we went to ONCE. Only ONCE. I don't want to badmouth this doctor on a public forum, but will give name and our reasons for switching if sent a PM.

Hi,

I'm 9 months pregnant with first baby and I have not found a pediatrician yet :-(

I live in Oerlikon and contacted Kinderarzt Praxis on Schulstrasse but they're not taking any new patients.

I called another doctor on Nansenstrasse and was told that I can't register before the baby is born.

Can anyone give me advice on whether I should wait until delivery or keep trying to find a doctor who'll accept registration before birth?

And is it OK if Kinderarzt is not in my local town? I don't have much pram-handling experience and I am not planning to drive so I would really appreciate if moms and dads can give me some ideas on this...

Thank you

We didn't register with a pediatrician until our daughter was born, because I didn't really know that it was standard practice. So, I wouldn't worry about it (though it doesn't hurt to keep trying). You might also ask the hospital or the midwife who sees you at home for recommendations.

Also, we live in Oerlikon but our pediatrician is in Wipkingen, so you don't need to have one in your neighborhood. We don't have a car, so we take the stroller on the train-it works out fine since if it was a true emergency, we'd call an ambulance or a taxi to the nearest emergency room rather than see our doctor. As long as you live near public transit and the doctor isn't too far, I think it's okay-and people are usually very helpful with the strollers on buses and trams (sometimes, they'll just grab one end without asking, and even the most sullen teenage boys have helped me!) Still, you'll be seeing your doctor FAR more than you think, so I'd say try to keep the travel time under 30 minutes (so Seefeld is a bit far for you).

Thanks for your reply. I tried some places with recommendation but they wouldn't take new patients! I'll try to find other doctors outside Oerlikon.
