Erotic Cinemas in Zurich City

I just arrived in Zurich and I went for a walk during the week end.

I just noticed that in the centre of the city there are some "e r o t i c cinema". I was very surprised and I was not expecting to be so central.

My questions is ......how is possible? Is it really only a cinema???

I never saw them in any other city

Well to give you an example when you arrive at the airport there are billboard sized advertisements for gentlemens clubs and also some trams carry outside advertisements for the same.

Zurich is probably pretty open like that.

I fear you have lived a slightly sheltered life.

Many many European cities have erotic cinemas . . .

you must have been walking down what is affectionally known as "titty-strasse".

yes, they are cinemas, but you may not necessarily like the spectators inside.

and yes, they are quite common around Europe

Welcome to the forum

A nice first post!

Welcome!

I find the Stussi Cinema a useful geographical point of reference. Everybody in Zurich knows it so it is easy to direct someone around the Niederdorf using the gentlemen's entertainment place as a landmark.

Nope, it's also a wine bar (you've seen one one of those in another

city? ) with good prices and eclectic avantgarde art exhibitions

.

Hi and welcome

Hahaha, we usually notice what interest us

Less central, but nonetheless quite accessible with the N° 7 tram is the Petite Fleur at Wollishofen. The town of Zurich's officially licenced brothel. I believe for CHF5 you can pop in and take a look...

Just another excuse to ask naive questions about sex thread with out looking like being a perv. Actually I can't think of any major city, or even small city like Inkster or Mt Morris Michigan, that doesn't have them.

Do you remember Deep Throat? I saw a documentary on it, really, and it showed how many porn theaters there were in the US back in the day. But yes, you can see naked girls in there.

To answer the question of how is it possible, are you asking from a moral standpoint or a building permit moving pictures technology one? I can give you an answer to anyone.

Welcome Freddy.... Let us know where you've come from, we all want to know where in the world they aren't titty bars and cinemas just so we can avoid those places!

There seem to be lots of these threads all of a sudden.

We'll all make remarks about titty bars etc and how cool that is (although of course none of us would ever actually go there) and then about 4 pages on somebody will point out that it's all wrong and immoral and that person will suddenly get lots of support and somebody else will close down the thread. And then somebody else will start all over again.

It all gives work for the working man to do

Who ever said that being a dirty old man wasn't hard work.

I think this is more to the point. Langstrasse's all well and good, but the Niederdorf? I wasn't expecting to see them there either.

(I guess because it'd been talked up to me as the Historic Old Town and whatnot... was expecting it to be all bakeries and boutiques and charming little café-bookshops.)

So yeah - I was surprised too, my first visit. (GG is probably right on about the 'sheltered life' bit.)

yea...well,i'm not sure it's sheltered but in the u.s there's usually regulations on where xxx places could be in relation to schools, residential areas, etc.

i was surprised to find a strip club in our neighborhood as well, right between the path of two schools...

I do wonder how much longer these cinemas and cabarets are going to be in Niederdorf though. I lived right opposite one of these places (2 more 50m down the road) and I hardly ever see anyone going in there. When I visited a couple of places with a friend they were all deserted, with middle aged russian women trying to block your way when you want to leave, they seem rather desperate. It's about time they get replaced by bars, restaurants, whatever, but they're clearly not contributing anything to Niederdorf imho. I don't mind a real strip-joint, mind you, but all these dirty disguised brothels are no fun at all.

isn't the average age there 35 + ?

Same in CH. They can't actually open new places in locations like that, but those that exist they can't close down against the owner's wishes as long as no laws are broken. New places, however, can only go up in designated areas, and these areas are generally not so attractive for the owners in terms of attracting clients. This is the reason that the old places rarely close down but just change hands from one owner to the next. Some go back 50 years or more. It is also the reason that in the last couple of years the city council of Zürich has bought up a number of these places, seeking to break through that cycle and purposely re-let or sell them to people who promise to use them for other purposes, so essentially causing the rights to their previous usage to expire. The Big Ben West Side is one positive example that comes to mind, the Nachtigall is another.

I used to live in the Niederdorf too and I share this observation. But then there are many other shops that never seem to see customers either (and some that are hardly ever open). Lots of things I don't understand.
