ERV Wau-Miau pet insurance

Apologies in advance if this turns into a rant....

The ship's dog has been insured with the above for 5 or 6 years. My vet recently rang me to say they'd received 2 payments from Europäische Reiseversicherung with the dog's name on them and were they mine.

I called ERV this morning and a rather unpleasant young man told me they sent the payments to an IBAN number hand-written on one bill. This was the vet's bank account so I could pay that one bill. Had I notified ERV in writing of a new bank account, I asked? Did the signature on that bill in any way resemble my name? If not, a) why the devil did they *assume* it was a change of bank account and b) how the devil did the respective banks allow the payments through when the account name and number didn't match?

5 minutes later the postie arrives with a registered letter from said insurers cancelling the policy with 14 days notice from receipt of said letter - not mentioned on the phone. So of course I ring back. Oh yes, quoth he. It's because we've paid out more money to you than we've made out of you.

Huh? Isn't that the entire model of the insurance industry? You lose a bit of money on a handful of customers because you'll make loads on the thousands of customers who pay their premiums and never need to claim?

Not only that, but the stated grounds for cancellation cite the incorrect clauses of their T&Cs.

What an incompetent shower.

And I suppose it would be a total waste of time and energy to fight this one

Yes, probably. You could try under the fact of their incompetence and incorrect cancellation of the contract, but it is really worth it? Just put the premiums you previously paid for the insurance in a separate bank account and use if needed.
