A friend of mine from Ireland needs to renew his EU B permit soon. He won’t have a full-time job contract which might be a problem. Can he provide proof of financial means (stocks, bank accounts) to get B permit for 5 more years? What amount is required?
More than 5 years? Don’t believe that is possible.
They said 5 more years (ie and another 5 years) not more than 5 years.
Short answer : yes
Longer answer: it depends
To get a B permit on financial means, you need to show that you have sufficient cash to support your way of life without reliance on the state. There isn’t a hard number, but this is also canton dependent.
e.g. cost of living in Zurich will be higher than Lugano.
If you can show ~10k/month for 5 years (600k in cash in a bank account), you “should” be ok.
The right to free movement is to work not to live at leisure (there are other visas for that - which require sufficient non economic income). There is also a general requirement to have established within five years (Very few people have an issue with this one, so it does not come up).
Note that if you’re receiving unemployment insurance (RAV/Chômage) it counts as full time employment for permit renewal, etc
It does?
Yes, RAV counts as full time employment. The issue can arise with 3rd country citizens (sometimes they don’t get the RAV extended after the date of expiry of their permits), but for EU people it is not a problem.
As RAV has a fixed ending date I suspect that they will treat it as a fixed term contract.
Would that then limit the time you get the permit for? As in only 1 year if your work contract is 1 year?
We’re not talking about obtaining a permit, but merely renewing it. If the minimum conditions are still met, you get it renewed.
I heard it once first hand from person who renewed permit in these circumstances, but I don’t really remember anything about the validity period of the renewed B permit.
I know two different people who were given C permits when renewing B permits whilst on RAV.
thanks for sharing @BelgianMum do you recall if those 2 people from the EU? Or 3rd party nationals ?
Both EU.
Thanks all for the replies. It’s certainly good to hear that RAV counts for B permit renewal and maybe even C permit. I’ll let my friend know.
