thanks for the tip (my technichal skills have not developed to be able thank directly on a post!), just signed up. I had something similar but recently received an e-mail from them stating that they could not renew the annual policy due to me being resident in Switzerland.
I'll, am, keep touching wood too. Lucky enough never to have had to claim on these policies...
Amex Platinum and Centurion charge cards (and possibly some other upmarket credit cards) come with LDW cover, but I've never seen it offered separately in Switzerland.
Yep I've used them for several years now and I even had a claim for a parking scrape in Spain (€250). I sent them all the paperwork and they paid up in full, no quibbles.
The higher level ACS membership includes it along with cancellation insurance and the gereral breakdown stuff. Quoted at CHF 290 but I know discounts are possible for certain corporate connections:
Am I missing something... but I cannot see the point of that insurance. Does it covers just the Excess that you will have to pay the rental company if you trash the car??
If so the last time I checked English-speaking countries:
- renting to the USA the loss-damage-waiver and additional liability insurance were compulsory for non-USA-residents (but also no taxes either). So there is no excess for loss, so no excess insurance needed.
- renting in the UK, the excesses were of the order of £350, so even the extra insurance offers up to £5000, you effectively only get £350.. so paying a £55 annual fee, to perhaps get £350 back, if you happen to trash your car on the rare (perhaps) occassion you rent one seems too extrame.
Of course may be useful for other countries, eg renting a car for a safari in Africa..
I lost my £600 excess with Enterprise UK after a non-insured driver went into the back of me. That aside, any minor dent, windscreen damage etc.. could lose you your entire excess which can be as high as £900 with some car rental companies, or many 000s in places like Morocco. Therefore this insurance is well worth it for the piece of mind.
I have been using Questor Insurance Services Limited, Chatham, Kent, UK, for several years (last yearly renewal £ 40.-) They are underwritten by White Horse Insurance (Ireland) Limited. I am resident of Switzerland.
I've been inspired to seek this thread after looking at renting in Ireland. The quote for excess cover via a 3rd party site doubled when I switched the address setting from the UK default to Switzerland.
Thanks to your post it now seems I can get a better annual policy for half the price of the 10 day cover I was looking at in Ireland.
Questor just stopped offering SLI, so it's not much use for Canada/USA car rentals. Shame because I used it for the last two years. Anyone know of a good replacement for Swiss residents, renting cars in Canada/US?
