Exchange cash

what is the best way to exchange cash in switzerland? (CHF->USD)

i know i could do it in bank or at travelex office or probably at SBB.

any other options? and which one might be the best? (i need to change around 1000 CHF )

I always did mine at the post if you have a post account. They gave me the best rate.... but at the current exchange rate there will not be that much of a difference I guess.

i just tried, and i was told it is not possible to buy dollars at the post office. maybe you changed it to euros? that is possible.

any other ideas where can i exchange my money with good currency exchange rate?

I know that the UBS branc in the Zurich airport terminal will do it (CHF -> USD). Other UBS branches also do it.

On top of the exchange rate, I believe they charge a USD 50.00 or 1% fee, whichever is higher.

I think CS will do something similar. After 9/11, they stopped dispensing USD from ATM machines at Zurich airport.

Traditionally, I have paid extra into the CC, and then when in the US, used the CC to get USD from ATM machines.

HTH. Regards,

I have a USD 100 bill that I will sell to you for CHF 100.

Unlike in other countries, foreign currency exchange rate here is not competitive,ie the exchange rate is pretty much the same with minimal difference. You don't really 'shop around' for the best deal. The banks and SBB have almost similar rates.Better than Travelex.

is it possible to order it anywhere online?

like in many other countries? https://www.travelex.co.uk/uk/wallet/options.aspx for example

If you have any friends or colleagues working for a bank, they tend to get a bit more favorable exchange rate if they exchange over the counter from their staff account. It is not always applicable for all currency but CHF to USD should be fine....if you know of someone, just ask them to do you a favor.

xe.com daddy

how exactly i can use it to get cash (USD) ?

i don't have dollar account, and i don't think it is good idea to make one just to exchange 1000 usd...

If you are looking to change CHF to USD, send me a PM. I live in Zurich and I'm looking to exchange USD to CHF. I always use the XE.com for the rates.

Let me know

Thanks

thank you for your offer, maybe i will use it,

but i was just wondering is there any official way of doing it. i guess there is none? isn't it a little strange?

small country in the middle of eurozone, and we cannot exchange currency other than paying big comissions to a bank?

50 usd commision as someone mentioned, is quite a lot. especially that i decided i want rather small amount (300-400).

thank you for your offers, it is just annoying that i have to 'ask around' people to sell me money. I don't even know how to recognize if it's a fake or not.

There is a ZKB ATM station in Niederdorf. You feed it Francs and it gives you dollars. If I remember correctly its better than at the train station

Yes, it unfortunate that you have to pay big commissions to exchange money here. It is a controlled market with no Exchange houses, just banks with unfavorable rates.

Good Luck

p.s. To detect if a 100 dollar bill is good or not, tilt the note a bit and the color of number 100 should change from green to black.

you can open currency exchange account with xe.com which will allow you to buy and sell them. Good for larger amounts.

seems it's here under Changeautomaten

http://www.zkb.ch/de/center_worlds/e...atentypen.html

as to commission it says:"Hinweis: Gratis für ZKB Maestro-Karte und Kontokarte, Transaktionsgebühr CHF 5.-- für Benützung mit Maestro-Karte CH"

witch means i will have to pay 5CHF if i don't have ZKB account (which i don't). still, no idea about current exchange rate... is it normal ZKB exchange rate or different? and i wonder if it supports postcard...

i asked my bank, and they will send it to me at the current exchange rate , to my home! for only 5 chf!

so it is like this in switzerland also!

really nice. (i have account at PostFinnance by the way)

thank you all for tips
