Expeida rant

I do wonder how they go on with that here, e.g. Küsnacht can also be written as Kuesnacht.

The names I used to dread seeing on a booking request were Jo, Sam and John Smith.

hope so. the Point now is, i not know if i should believe them or not. so, only can wait.

Swiss Airline has at least given me answer in written. but Expedia not.

i had a bad experience last year, given Name and last Name were exchanged. for example, it should be lily5469, but written 5469lily.

i had to buy a new ticket at Airport.

Could you please cut and paste the text of the Swiss reply and post it here? Obviously, leave off any reference to your name and email address.

yes, but only in german.

That's fine.

the Problem now is, the air ticket Price is going up every day when it draws near to my flight date. should i buy a new ticket now or?

i cant be sure before i see that my Name is corrected..

but i cant get definite answer in written.

My last name contains an umlaut and it is written with an umlaut in my passport. When booking tickets I always use the "oe" version though. I have literally travelled all over the world and it has not once been a problem. Occasionally, they look at the passport with a slightly irritated look, so I briefly explain why it's written differently. No big deal.

So... the answer Swiss have sent to you is just acknowledging that, at present, 'ownership' of your ticket is still with Expedia.

Please do not buy a new ticket until you can provide me with the answers to the questions I gave you for Expedia. That would be throwing good money after bad at this stage. I've noticed that Swiss have fares of CHF89 and CHF109 for the week beginning 30 September.

Have you bought 2 one way tickets, or did you buy a return ticket (out and return)?

Thanks. They're used to it.

OH's name is written in Greek and English on his passport, with two possible variants of his given name. I used to have quite a few clients from Sri Lanka. Their names made South American names look like a walk in the park. Some people get quite uppity that all their name isn't shown on their bookings, but booking systems can only hold a limited number of letters in that field.

strictly speaking, this is probably incorrect. you should just remove the umlaut as it is an english-speaking aviation world.

in the end, it doesn't really seem to matter though.

Remove it from where, the passport?

Tell that to the Swiss government

That being said, my passport was issued 5 years ago and admittedly, I was a bit surprised they put the name with an umlaut rather than the "international" version. I did wonder at the time whether it'd ever present a problem, but it never did.

Write it as it is printed in the machine readable zone. That could be eiter AE or A for Ä as specifiec in ICAO Doc 9303, Part 3, Chapter 6

i've changed names a number of time with easyjet and they've been pretty good and never charged me for this.

Usually, the first thing the airline asks for upon check-in is the BOOKING CODE. Then they can retrieve the ticket quite easily. And what about online check-in the night before and printing your own boarding pass? Again, problem solved.

Another tactic I use with phone in customer service is if I don't get the answer I like, I call back later and start over again.

Good luck... i think this is solveable.

i have bought return ticket, but from different airline company. cause i have strict requirements for flight time due to cruise. for flight from Barcelona, i must take the flight in the afternoon, but not evening. so, it will cost much more.

Good, so you only have the outbound flight to be concerned about. Luckily, Swiss aren't the only airline to fly direct from Zurich to Barcelona, so you can look at fares with Vueling also.

A little off topic

@blueangel: would you know of specialist travel companies which have special price arrangements for flights to South Asia.

Thanks

And double and triple-check your info before you book. Your name is a rather important part of the booking so shouldn't you be sure it's right before you click confirm or buy??

Tell me about it. I have a rather long hyphenated name. Some systems take the hyphen, some don't. Those that don't sometimes mash the names together and some put spaces. Some systems can't handle the full length of the name. It's always fun to see what I get on a boarding pass. That said, I've never had a problem with officials.

Yesterday i booked a J class return to SE Asia with Expedia. This thread got my so nervous I had to ho and check I'd written my own name correctly

Fortunately, I did.
