Facebook offered me an ad free option for CHF7/month

It’s happened. Facebook has asked me choose between the ad-free CHF 7 option or the free of charge with ads option.

I’m not paying but I’m also not looking forward to wading through the myriad of ads.

I mostly get pages ‚you may like‘. Also annoying as their algorithm is crap.

Much as I hate it I was using Facebook recently, and I don’t really recall seeing any adverts. Ad blockers apparently just work, and are so simple to install.

I use u-block origin on Firefox, also works on Chrome , Edge and others. It’s less effort to install permanently than each time you have to click to close adverts. Just two clicks from https://ublockorigin.com/

Were you not already getting ads? For a while, basic adblockers worked and then FB started the cat and mouse game to bypass the adblockers while increasing the ad load.

There are also specialized browser extensions to remove ads and other annoying elements from facebook.

You could try Facebook Purity. It’s good for eliminating the ads and sponsored posts.

Just for a laugh I tried this a week or two back - didn’t notice any difference compared with just using the ad blocker extension.

You have to go into the settings menu of FBP and check the boxes of all the stuff you don’t want to see on your timeline and other features. I found that ad blockers don’t hide things like Sponsored Posts, for example. Sometimes FB gets around the add-on and previous functions get over-ridden but FBP work on it and find a workaround a couple of days later. Not all heroes wear capes.

Ah right. Yeah, I guess if one wanted to make some sort of sense of the massive overload of garbage then you could do that. I was only thinking about the original point about the ad-free version, which would presumably not give you that sort of filtering/blocking/tailoring capability either.

I‘ve clicked on the options „show fewer ads like these“ and „not interested“ which seems to have reduced the amount of ads somewhat.

Have you still not installed an ad-blocker in your browser yet? Or are you using the app?

I usually use my iPhone to access FB. Iscthere an adblocker for safari?

No idea. Quick search reveals :
uBlock Origin’s extension is available for several of the most widely used browsers, including: Chrome, Chromium, MS Edge, Opera, Firefox and all Safari releases prior to 13.

Adblock works very well with FF, seems to also be available for Safari.
