I was told that to submit for maternity leave payment we need to have the birth cert of the child and also the family book.
Can anyone be so kind to share with me, where can we obtain this family book and what is it actually?

It's the red book you receive when you marry in Switzerland. If you aren't married to a Swiss or you married elsewhere (and didn't register the marriage here) perhaps you don't get one.
We've got one but I'm married to a Swiss and we married here.
Basically it's a book which records marriage, birth and death.

The family book as you call it is the 'livret de famille' issued by the state. It's an official documentation recording you and your partner's name, origins, act of marriage etc.. and with it registration of births. It is an important document and you have to have it.
I'm not 100% sure but I think you might have to ask at the ̈'Police des Habitants', where they issue all legal documents like visas and permits ??? And, you have to pay a nice healthy fee, of course !

It shouldn't be compulsory because there are plenty of expat families collecting child support (Kinderzulage) and being paid for their maternity leave, most of whom won't have this book (Familienbuchlein.)
Maternity leave should be coordinated with your HR department so perhaps start your enquiry there. The birth certificate of your child should be enough to satisfy their payment requirements.
If neither of you are Swiss it is highly unlikely that you will ever get a 'Family Book' ( Familienbüchlien in German). As Switzerland is so decentralised it is quite likely that the person you are dealing with locally doesn't realise this as they have one themselves and think every one has one. Just tell them you don't have one. If you partner is Swiss you will be able to get one...
Basially what is in the family booklet is your marriage certificate, family cerificate (new one with each child) and birth ceritificate(s)
Min eis not even a "booklet2 as such but more a folder where you put all original certificates.
If you are not Swiss just present the same documents from your country of origin.

As a foreigner, you need to check with the civil registry within the Gemeinde in which you're registered. They'll be able to issue with the documents if you needed them. But, as already mentioned, I would've expected that your HR department would deal with all of this for you
There are 2 things:
1) The maternity pay that the employee gets
2) The reimbursement that the employer gets from the state
For 1) typically an employee does nothing and simply continues to receive their salary (or % of) for the number of weeks which are stated in the contract
For 2) the employer needs some documents from you in order to claim the money back from the state.

If you are Swiss, you get one from your Heimatort.
If neither is Swiss, you don't get one.

Maybe it would help us more if we knew what Nationalities you and your husband are? If one is German then you will also be able to get a Family book. If not then be sure to phone / go past the Social office and ask them for help and what you can do. Wish you by the way a good rest before your baby arrives and best wishes for the future.
