Family Reunification Application Experiences

Hi All!

I was just wondering - to those who have applied for Family Reunification visa for their spouses, can you please share your experiences? Particularly for those who are Non-EU or/and doing their PhDs?

Were you able to apply for the family reunification visa at the same time you applied for the Type D visa? Or did your spouse apply only after you have received your B Residence Permit? How long did the process take? I'd really like to be able to move to Switzerland together with my husband.

Long story short: I was offered a paid PhD position (70%) at the Universite de Neuchatel. My spouse and I are both Non-EU, currently working and based in Dublin, Ireland. Read here in the forum that PhD students can bring their spouse if they are able to satisfy certain conditions.

Hope you all are keeping safe!

AFAIK until further notice non EU will not be allowed to enter Switzerland so I doubt that they will start a family reunification process.

For generic data, have a look around the forum?

Really? Switzerland is closing their borders for Non-EU nationals only? That's strange, didn't hear that from the news, etc.

I guess that's fair. I was planning on starting the application around mid to late April anyways.

The whole of the EU Shengen Area is closed to non-EU nationals and Switzerland is part of that.

Whether you’d be able to come here since you’re already in the Schengen Area you’d need to check with the Swiss embassy in Ireland. But it seems the Swiss cantonal authorities are not issuing new permits atm anyway for the foreseeable future.

Not just closed to non-EUs: anyone who is not Swiss or has a valid Swiss resident permit or is a legitimate cross-border worker with a G permit is forbidden from crossing the Swiss border at present.

Hi!

I'd like to know what happened with you guys. We applied for a family reunification Visa to wife and 2 kids at the Swiss Embassy at Mexico in March 2020, and the Migration of the Canton requested further documentation in June 2020 which was submitted already. From there I'd like to know how long it takes to get the Visa approval. It's been over 2 months already apart from my husband

Hi Yolotzin,

Sorry to hear about your situation. We were able to apply for my visa and my husband's family reunification visa together. We applied on the 15th of June and luckily, we received the visa on the 23rd of July.

We didn't expect it to be very swift. The Embassy told us that it will take 6 weeks minimum but it didn't even take that long. I would advise you to follow up with the Embassy and the Canton specifically.

Hope you get your visa soon!
