Family reunification language requirement (non-EU + Swiss spouse)

Hi there,

I am a non-EU national currently living in London with my Swiss wife.

We are planning to move to Switzerland next year and have started the process of registering our marriage with the Swiss authorities and kicked off the family reunification process (D Visa, which will be followed by a B permit I believe).

One thing we are not clear on is the language requirement for me, as the non-EU person applying. On one hand, it seems like there is a requirement to demonstrate A1 spoken level, or enrollment to a language course. However, the following document states language requirements do not apply to spouses of Swiss citizens:

https://www.eda.admin.ch/dam/countri...achweis_EN.pdf (see: "Who do the new regulations affect?")

Does anyone have experience with this and can clarify if I will be required to demonstrate language knowledge at this stage? This is slightly confusing and I can't find information on what the requirements are exactly when the family reunification is done based on the spouse being Swiss.

Thank you in advance!

Hi, we have the same constellation. Swiss citizen pulling a non-EU spouse via family unification. The non-EU person does not have to show any knowledge of language whatsoever for the B-permit. The non-EU person will be eligible for Swiss citizenship after five years in CH, at which point there is a language requirement. I don't recall this exact requirement.

For citizenship it’s B1. For a C permit after 5 years I think it’s lower A1 or A2.
