favorit or lieblings?

so i have to give a small presentation in my german class and i often use the word favorit for "my favourite band/food/country to visit" etc

and my MIL said that was wrong, and i should use lieblings....

but isn't lieblings too strong? and why can't i use favorit ?? is it wrong? i have heard it used so many times but then again, sometimes the german here is mixed with swiss german/ english and slang...

what is the proper High German way?

It is correct to say Lieblings, it means favourite/dearest. Favorit is used more for example Er gilt dieses Jahr als Favorit ( he is the favorite (win) this year) or "Er ist der haushohe Favorit" which can mean he is vastly superior to the other competitors.

According to my husband lieblings is the correct option and not too strong for the context.

Favorisiert ( which needs declination but is not really used) is also an option but not as good and favorit is not a verb so cant really be used in that context.

The proper High German translation for favourite is bevorzugt ( again with declination)

If you wanted to say "my favourite band is..." you would say "Meine Lieblingsband ist ...."

If you wanted to say " My favourite/preferred solution is.... " you would say " Meine bevorzugte Lösung ist... "

thanks, i recall someone saying that favorit is for this, ie. "odds on favourite"

hi katie (and husband!) this a concise explanation,thanks. i have never used the word bevorzugt, but it seems like a very useful option....

now if only i can remember all the declinations etc

You can of course also say something cute like:

"Er (oder sie) isch min Lieblingsfavorit!"

mein liebster (adjective for masculine nouns, such as "Sänger" = singer)

meine liebste (feminine, such as "Musikgruppe")

mein liebstes (e.g. for "Lied" = song)

Using the adjective is not quite as fluffy as "Lieblings...whatever"

I hate this word other then for your "liebling"(person ) .But it`s correct. (Mein lieblings essen )

i was trying to get away from fluffy...so will try these adj, thanks

to me liebling sounds more like "loved one" too! ie. for a person,

ditto for above, but i guess i need to separate the love connotation from liebling in these contexts....

You can also say "die Leibspeise", or nobler, "das Leibgericht" for favorite dish.

"Liebster, Liebste" have a lot more of a love connotation than "Lieblings-" or even "Liebling".

These are extremly strong words used by lovers. You shouldn't really use them for things.

"Liebling" is rather a word an old couple would use.

Google search "liebstes Lied"->1'670 hits, "Lieblingslied" ->936'000.
