On the food in Switzerland topic I've read both pro's and cons for the meat here. Wanted to start a thread about specific meats that are great and where to find them.
My two rappen:
1) The pre-sliced turkey breast at Coop, never had better lunch meat.
2) The pikante Salami at Migros, if you're missing pepperoni this will hit the spot.
3) Any of the pre-marinated meats at the Coop meat counter, perfect for grilling if you're short on time.
I love italiener Kase, that super thin kind of Bologna type deli meat. I buy it at Migros. And all theKalbs Bratwurst (st. Gallaner). I have to be honest living in Basel I shop in France (wonderful Ham) and Germany(they have loads of deli meat and sliced cheeses) alot. It is much cheaper frankly usually almost half the price especially Pork, beef, and chicken. I only buy these things in der Schweiz if they are on sale Coop Whole chickens this week or reduced 1/2 off because they are going to expire. They are always good for freezing or eating in a few days.
- Ostrich fillet (can find at the coop tho pricey, Denners regularly sell them and the quality is excellent)
- Prawns (The China Vietnam supermarket, Militär Str., nearly the size of your hand at 36 Sfr/kilo)... also a wide assortment of exotic frozen seafood
- Lamb chops (the frozen kind at Migros but straight outta kiwiland)
- rabbit liver (Migros city, löwenplatz)....hmmmm
- Shaved roast beef (brill. prepacked at most big Migros)... also smoked turkey perfect for sandwiches
- A GOOD beef steak.... unfortunately only the prepacked Angus beef so far (Migro) and really pricey.... anyone know where else?
-Spare ribs (deli counter migros löwenplatz, Kreuzplatz.....not the little half ones you normally get here....but slightly smoked)
Actually the other day I bought Beef steaks vacum packed at PAM and they were surprisingly good and 1/2 off. They were normally 47.50 a Kilo, reduced for quick sale. I will definitley buy them again as these were the best I had eaten her in der Schweiz. American Beef is excellent so in comparison these were good and not tough.
I already posted this on Food in Switzerland but they deserve it again....
"For good meat in Ch I can reccomend Natura Beef, Äntschbergweg, 8303 Basserdorf - not far from ZH airport. I've not been there but a friend brings regular deliveries.
The prices aren't that bad for the superb quality. The rib-eye is fantastic! They also sell cherries apparently

You can also get some good Natura Beef at the Co-op. It's maybe 20% more expensive but the quality is double the normal stuff. We're having entrecotes tonight with bernaise sauce
Love Venison (and most game in particular Wild Boar) and am very open to all food types but just don't fancy horse meat. I had a discussion with an English mate about this and we decided (over plenty of beer) that English people do not like horse meat only because the French do.
I love venison, never tried Horse although in Geneva and here in Basel there are special butcher shops for Pferd. I do not think I could eat it but would probably try it. Oh it is a French thing than I really do not like it!
