Fibre installation

Excuse me for the probably newbie question but I've only been here a few months

I'm about to move into a new apartment and all the post code checks say FTTH is fully supported but the existing tenant looks to have a bog standard DSL line connected to what (going from memory here) was a Cablecom or similar box on the wall. Landlord when asked re fibre 'wasn't sure if we have it but if you want it we can look at it no problem'

Whats usually the scoop in getting fibre into an apartment which doesnt have it bearing in mind this is on the top (5th) floor?

In the UK they'd whack some wiring between the box on the road and run the fibre cable into my house (or did when i had FTTH from BT installed last year) but what do they do with apartments here?

If it's a new apartment, there may be a fibre outlet in the apartment.

If not, and wired up already, there might be a 'distribution box' somewhere in the building and a line fished from there to the apartment.

Yeah that's kinda what I expected although the existing tenant was a bit vague and he's supposedly a developer. I might see I can do a second visit and have a nosey again and look for one.

To be honest I'm on shared Wifi in a Swiss Star at the mo and its so unbelievely shite (like losing wifi sometimes 3 times in ONE Netflix episode in an evening shite) that anything remotely stable would be a bonus, however the deals for fibre seem to be cheaper than normal DSL and I'm a tight Northerner... so you know I'm gonna look at the cheaper option

Just look for an ftth non binding contract with an internet provider.

They will probably ask you for 1 or 2 month in advance, then you will be able to quit whenever.

Once done they will arrange for you an appointment with a technician who will check and eventually install the fiber cable from the basement to your apartment.

If the job is not feasible you will just get a dsl (probably at the same or lower price) and you will be free to change it after that 1 or 2 months that you already paid (or maybe you can ask the money back).

Do they have changeover periods here between DSL connections like you do in the UK where you have 10 days between customers or some rubbish like that?

Anybody had recently installed fibre to their village / area? How does it work generally, do they run a cable to each house / apartment? Only to a box in the street etc ? Do you need to request it? Do you just get what's available?

Swisscom have been saying for a while that fibre will come to our village July / Aug / Sept .. Indeed I've seen the company laying the cables (Spire?) .. They seem to have gone now but still not much info from Swisscom on what might happen next.. The original letter said something like FTStreet, FTbuilding, FThome .. Each with different speeds.. But not what we'd get.

We have an individual house with a copper cable running from a pole at the end of our garden ..

It depends. In the City of Zurich it is FTTH and not Fiber to the Curb or to the Street as it might be in rural area.

Also in the City of Zurich getting the fiber cables into your home is free of charge (proudly paid by your tax money). The outlet,the so called OTO socket, is normally located in the multimedia outlet box, or near a telephone socket, or near the cable tv socket.

FTTH in the City of Zurich is open access and you can freely choose from different service provider.

Cablecom (cable TV provider) is not DSL. As DSL uses the telephone line.
