Film recommendations for learning German?

Hello,

While recently re-watching Inglorious Basterds, I realized that much of the dialogue is spoken in high German, and that watching films in German (with or without subtitles) can help one learn the language, especially in terms of proper usage and self-expression.

So, I wonder if anyone can recommend good or "classic" films in German? Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt?) comes to mind...

Thanks,

Ranjit

You sometimes get German spoken with English subtitles on YouTube which is a great aid to learning. Here is one example.

I guess Der Untergang (or is it Die Untergang) is a good one. Was called 'Downfall' in English about Hitler's last moments in the bunker. Was about three hours long as I recall. But probably only any good if you want to learn shouty type German...

And another one.

Films outside realm of WWII are most welcome as well.

I once watched 'Das Experiment'. It's a bit of a horror based on a real experiment but it does get pretty savage in places. Still quite good tho

I enjoyed

Goodbye, Lenin Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex

Das Leben der Anderen is also supposed to be great, but every time I try to watch it, I just can't settle into it.

Maybe I'll try watching English or French movies I've already seen, with German audio. Die Hard should become interesting. Yippee Kai-ai-yo M_____!

Try "Schweizer Macher" it's in german/swiss german and it will give you some interesting insights about swiss mentality even if the movie is from late 70's

I watched Das Leben der Anderen, I found it good for hearing the German.

We've just seen Nordwand about one of the early ill-fated ascents of the North face of the Eiger . The film was was excellent - there are no English subtitles but there are German ones for the hard-of-hearing which are useful when you're trying to hear what the climbers are saying in the middle of an alpine storm.

YOU MEAN THERE'S ANOTHER TYPE?!?!?

"Das Boot" for HG, and "Achtung, Färtig, Charlie" for SG would be a couple of films I'd recommend.

Little Britain in German is also a cracker...

Not a film, but Sponge Bob has to be a great way to learn German!

SITZEN MACHEN!

(Billy Wilders "one, two, three" is great in German)

...any Rammstein documentary should do.

Hogan's Heroes is also dubbed very well, including various types of German dialects from Bavarian to Saxon.

-Sonnenallee

-Herr Lehmann

-Der bewegte Mann

-Gegen die Wand

-Keinohrhasen

For the advanced German-with-sore-throat-Speaker:

-Herbstzeitlosen

and if you want to get a sense of Bavarian humour:

-Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot

Das Boot. 200+ minutes of proper German.

Oh, do pay attention 007...

I second "Das Leben der Anderen", great film.

Also Wim Wenders "Der Himmel über Berlin"

(English: Wings of Desire). It is a wonderful movie. (Don't be put off my the description and don't even begin to compare it to a similar but absolutely awful movie with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage)
