We live by a road which always has a huge queue at rush hour, and one thing which really gets my goat are idiots who hang back massively every time the queue moves.
It means that people behind them wanting to turn into or off the road have to wait longer, and the controlled junctions further back are also less efficient.
So I was chuffed (/ smug) to see someone a few cars in front of me get pulled over by a cop in the car behind them and get a right bollocking. I'm pretty sure that was the reason from the hand gestures (pointing back in the queue, hands apart to hands together, stuff that looked like are you a selfish moron...)
I don’t know. I was taught not to stop on a crosswalk, nor to enter an intersection unless I know I can leave. Both of these seem to raise the ire of other drivers, particularly f-taliers.
That's fair - I'm talking about the people who hang back 20+m and then drift forward at walking pace.
On a similar theme, I was recently on a driving course run by Zurich police driving instructors.
I was very pleased to learn that when traffic merges from 2 lanes to one, you should not hang back, but if your lane has space drive to forward to the front and merge zip style...
Yes, that’s in the new rules:
https://www.astra.admin.ch/dam/astra…%20figures.pdf
Also that you must let people on to the motorway in a zipper, which surprisingly didn’t make it into the theory test last year.
One of world’s ironies. Zip style improves traffic flow for almost everyone, but pisses off those people you overtake on the right. And some of them won’t let you in because you cheated.
Big time! Here the rule of letting one car merge at a time, still applies.
Otherwise we would all stay in outer lane and zip in?!? How would that work
Yes exactly, one from each lane alternating.
Everyone should read the motorway rules:
https://www.astra.admin.ch/dam/astra…0motorways.pdf
Too many of the drivers around here are completely unaware of Swiss driving regulations. That should be a requirement for getting a G permit.
I took 3 driving licences in 2 years - and passed them all first time
I was not talking about joining Motorway, but 2 lanes merging into one, or side road joining main road.
Well stop it. It's unhelpful. And the cops agree.
In Basel, they've switched the two lanes north after Hegenheimerstrasse, so the left one is all bus lane. And now the queues stretch back to Morgartenring.
They're probably not paying attention because they're too busy looking at their phones.
I've also seen that cause an accident on our street - guy in front of me ran into the back corner of a lady turning right (who stopped because she had to wait for a pedestrian).
He got out and started giving it "you didn't indicate, you stopped suddenly, blah blah blah". I said "he was on his phone" and gave the lady my card, he shut up straight away.
That's a compelling reason - and one that I use, to not be too close to the car in front when queueing.
If the car driver behind is not paying attention and crashes into you, he could shunt you into the car in front of you.
More important is to keep your wheels straight while waiting to make a left turn. Then if rear ended your vehicle will not be pushed into any potential oncoming traffic.
If I'm in traffic and there's 3 meters of space in front of the car in front of me or 30 meters, it doesn't get me anywhere any faster....
It’s not all about you. If you are taking up the space of 3 cars then 2 cars behind you can’t use that space. If someone ahead of you does the same it will slow you down.
While you may not get anywhere faster you are slowing down others.
