Firework bans

Anyone seen any for areas of Switzerland? Nothing around my area, but I would have thought with the recent dry weather and high temps there’d be some in place. Yet haven’t spotted any and shops are happily selling fireworks. Weird. :woman_shrugging:

There has been a lot of wet weather this summer so the ground and greenery is nowhere near as dry as in previous years.

It takes more than a few days of sun to dry things out to the extent that firework bans are necessary.

There are some cities that ban firework always. next year I will go there. my puppy experienced first time firework in her life and situation in Thun was terrible and my neighbors were crazy. She felt safer in the underground garage where it was quiet.
Next year if we are in Switzerland we will go to Graubünden, most of the bans are there. So, we will have a reason to visit Davos
I never liked all the noises and explosions that people enjoy, but from this year, I hate it……

75% of people want a ban on private fireworks.

My neighbours really don’t need fireworks - a middle aged woman and her adult son yet every New Year and 1st August they can’t help themselves.

Last night they started early and carried on lighting really loud fireworks every fifteen minutes for three hours. Both the cats pissed everywhere and were absolutely terrified. My other neighbour has cats and dogs -no doubt they were as happy as my animals were.

Organised displays are the way to go - in a field away from animals with thirty minutes of fireworks and that’s it.

Nobody bothers cleaning them up, either. The mess the next day is a disgrace.

there was actually a report on the Swiss news about a dog friendly hotel which has regulars on August 1st. You need to book early though from the sound of it. (but it’s not the only one)

We, and our pets, will be very happy when they replace all that bing, bang, boom, boom, BOOM with drones.

I think both should be banned – the first one, beyond and above pets, because of the toxicity of the chemicals released (chemist dixit). There are many other type of exhibitions or artistry that can replace them.
The second one, because of the large amount of energy required for a ‘good looking’ feature. Please also notice that the ‘optimal experience’ of a drone ‘fireworks’ exhibition is usually restricted to one specific area – achieving a real 360 degrees 3D view with drones requires massive amount of them!
I have seen also nice air- laser performances, but not sure if you can get them right without clouds…
Or… am I just growing old?

Dunno… Fireworks are fantastic, the smell and the bang and the flashes and the excitement, the “Ohhh’s” and “Ahhhh’s” are what make a good show and lets face it you dont have fireworks every day, unless you live on Malta. To replace fireworks with drones and lasers is like drinking alcohol free beer and trying to convice youself it tastes good.

By the way Dießen had a laser show at Sylvester instead of fireworks, they had to shoot smokebombs up first.

A middle ground exists that can help mitigate the adverse effects of traditional fireworks, while still allowing for an impressive celebration:

Low noise fireworks:

No, they are not silent as often described, but the noise is much reduced. Best used for small displays - I’d be grateful if my neighbors considered switching to these.

Several towns/cities in Europe and North America now mandate alternatives to traditional fireworks, either the low noise version or drone light shows. The latter often due to concerns over wildfires as well as the adverse effects on animals (domestic and wildlife) and people.

I know how important fireworks are to Swiss society, so I’m not advocating for a ban. Not my place to do so. But a little mitigation would be nice.

I’ve spent many an 1 August at the Tierspital, the worst was with a dog deliberately burned when drunken neighbors thought it hilarious to shoot fireworks directly at animals. So not much of a fan of unrestricted private fireworks. But I do understand that fireworks are an integral part of National Day celebrations, and always will be.

OK, off soapbox, back to jokes and memes…

I think post 280-284 should be moved by a mod to a firework-discussion thread (there are many). After all, August 1st is around the corner, the discussion will find many participants. But it has nothing to do with joke and memes.

Paleo ended Sunday evening in the pouring rain and a spectacular drone show.

Bravo to the organisers!
