I just heard from a guy at work that there will not be an organized firework show in Zürich on Swiss National Day because of the big show they had for Züri Fäscht. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
It's true that there's no big fireworks display, but not because of the Zürifest. For some reason Zurich never has a big communal celebration in the evening of 1. august. Instead the different quarters of the city organize celebrations of their own, some with, some without fireworks.
It's in german, but it should be easy enough to figure out. "Feuerwerk" means fireworks and "Höhenfeuer" means a big pile of burning wood, supposedly used in earlier times to warn against invaders. ;-)
There has never been an organised firework done by the city, but the fireworks are done by both private persons, quarters, organisations like football clubs etc
We usually hang out at Tiefenbrünnen and people take their own, although I do wonder about the safety aspect of this, drink and fireworks not a happy combination!
This year Im staying home with my pooches and will have a bbq.
The Etzel is not a bad viewpoint. If you get tired of watching the folk from Canton Zürich burning their money, you can stroll over to look down over the Sihlsee and watch a few from canton Schwyz doing the same thing.
You're in the best place. Hate the bring-your-own fireworks with a vengeance. My husband got hit in the arm by a rocket fired horizontally from a beer bottle by some pissed up reveller a few years ago down near Tiefenbrunnen.
Little kids barely out of nappies let loose with fireworks and means to ignite them - I stay well out of it.
