Urgent!
So I was cutting my dog's hair (rasta like(?) ) with scissors today, and accidentally cut a piece of skin from his arm, it's not a tiny piece I'm so sorry!
So I washed it and put some BACITRACIN zinc ointment, USP on it (this a first aid antibiotic ointment for humans) And my question is if this med is ok for dogs? Have you got any idea? I checked the internet but opinions about this are mixed there...
Am taking him tomorrow to the vet, but can't sleep now, worrying about him having an allergic reaction or something...

Don't let him lick it & should be ok. If you wrap a clean sock around it and tape it to keep it on (not too tight) that will help to ' remind' him. Would keep him close tonite so you can hear him if he tries to lick it.

When I had a dog, we applied polysporin to some cuts he got (playful GSD), when we told the vet, the vet said it was not recommended to use topical ointments meant for human on dogs, however the vet didn't say it was dangerous. Instead the vet recommended we use something (forget the name, about 10 years ago) that could be picked up at a compounding pharmacy (it wasn't expensive and it was made by the pharm right in front of us).
If the dog is going to have an allergic reaction to the ointment, the dog would have had it very shortly after it was applied.
Thank you for your kind post. I did put a band-aid on top of it, but he keeps taking it off.. now it's with adhesive tape on top of the bandage, I hope that will help.

Just don't let the dog lick it, as someone else mentioned; however there is zinc in many dog foods, so I doubt you dog is in any danger from having applied to a cut.
Wrap tape around top & another piece around bottom - half to fur & half to bandage. Will slow him down at least. Just not tightly.
I don't know about antibiotics, but I do know that paracetamol is toxic for dogs, it can severly damage their liver.
It's always tricky to use human medicine on an animal, but I guess a topical cream just once won't do any harm.
The most likely reaction from a topical cream for humans used on dogs will be a slight skin allergy/irritation. You probably didn't want to hear that ...
I used to work in a lab that formulated veterinary as well as human skin products, and the pH of the dog's skin is different to humans, so that is why you could expect a slight reaction, and it's not the best option..
I would expect the best course of action would be to speak to the vet, get a dog medicine if needed, and gently wash to remove the product...then treat again...
Ah he will be grand! If he was going to have a reaction he would have it by now! Try not to worry, i understand though that you r probably feeling guilty! poor you!
Anyways dogs lick pee and eat shoes and cables and all sorts of mad things. Their bodies are stronger than we think lol

For future reference:
When concerned about infection I use Septi-Cleanse, a veterinary antibiotic cream that I get from the US. But for minor cuts most of the time I simply clean the wound with warm water, and keep an eye out for redness, swelling or continued bleeding. Cuts that continue to bleed usually require veterinary attention.
When in doubt, I speak to a vet before using anything. Often simply cleaning the wound is sufficient until I can confirm what I need to do.

It's also a good idea to speak to your vet about putting together a first-aid kit; get his/her recommendations as to which OTC meds are appropropriate for your dog. The contents of such a kit will vary according to the individual, but some general tips can be found here:

I took Jeoui to the vet today and she said that there's not problem with applying the cream as a first aid, and recommended me to use Bepanthen Plus! this definitively left me relieved
Now am applying him the cream and fighting that he won't take the bandage off (which he has 2 times during this morning, he hates it).

It's weird that my ophthalmologists prescribed me Bepanthen for my eye; my regular doctor does the same for my nose when I get a cold; for dry lips; also for a cut on my face when I had an accident 2 moths ago...
And now the vet for my dog!
What is it whit this cream?? It's like miraculous! For everything!
