First time I've been shouted at [ Lawn Mowing ]

I was mowing my lawn today with a petrol mower (we have a large garden) at 11am on a Saturday. It takes me about an hour to mow the lawn, but at 11:55am my neighbour opened his window and started shouting (so loud that other people in the street stopped to see what all the fuss was about) and pointing his finger at me. He said that if I continue he will call the police because it is against the law to mow the lawn from midday till 2pm every day.

Is this true? What are the rules? I live in a detached house in Schwyz. I want to fit in here and observe the local customs, but I find it unbelievable that I can't mow the lawn on a Saturday without being shouted at. Does anyone know what the laws are in Schwyz regarding this terrible indiscretion?

Well i left it until 130pm thinking that was reasonable - I thought 12- 130pm was quiet time. Can hear plenty of mowers now

Caz down the road in Tuggen

according to DB you are not allowed to use motorised mowers in Schwyz at all . I could easily be wrong about this, or misunderstood. Anyone?

people have lunch between 12 - 14. It includes the usual nap, so calm is needed......

there you go

Thanks - but that is a joke, right? Living in Switzerland I'm not even sure whether you're joking or not!

mittagspause is sacrosanct - disturb at your peril!

The "general" rules are noise is alright (within reason of course!) from 8am-noon and 2pm-8 or 10pm (depending on day / season). I'd think for mowing you'd not want to be out too late though.

Perhaps starting earlier would be better, even if you'd prefer a bit of a lazy morning on the weekend.

It's also considered impolite to phone anyone during this time.. I can only assume it's due to the fact that many people go home for lunch and spend this time with their families or use this time to relax a little.

By the way, it's good for the lawn to cut it at 7 cm. the roots goes deeper in the ground.

Also good is to let a bit of wild grass you cut just at the end of the season.

that's for the bio-diversity.....

Could be a joke - one I didn't get. That post is the sum of my knowledge on the matter. PM Dougals Breakfast for more information on Canton Schwyz and it's...foibles.

what a lot of cobblers

as one who lives in kanton Schwyz and who was actually gifted a petrol mower by the previous occupants as we moved from a 5th floor apartment to a single house with lots of lawn

and who can hear several petrol mowers in the sleepy village

well what more can I say.

12- 2pm is fine for quiet - I started at 130pm but noone seemed cross.

mind you the kids would like a pet goat - maybe that is the way to go

DB was being sarcy about my beautiful home Kanton

Baby Jesus gets resurrected every time you mow on Sunday.

My take on it is here .

In that case I recommend not to plant any salads unless you put a fence around them that is goat-proof.

Maybe try picking up some " Nature's Lawn Mowers "?

A breeding pair may be good... you can have milk, some wool and occasionally a lamb for Easter dinner.

It varies from community to community, so the best thing to do is ask one of your neighbors. Try the one that was shouting since he seems to be the type of person who would know all the rules and it is also a good way to get back on his good side

In our area on a Saturday it is only allowed between 8:00am - 2:00pm and 4:30pm - 7:00pm

Good luck with that,

Jim

And you believe everything that he posts?

No but this is Switzerland. It's just as plausable as not being allowed to wash your car.

in aargau it is forbidden to plant potatos on a sunday.

so i think it very reasonable to not mow your lawn between 12 and 2pm. you should be eating your lunch, whilst discussing the mornings happenings with the family.

and at 2pm you should be back at work. so do it in the evening. simples.
